Ignition issue

Hello all, I went to start my 4Runner the other day and when I went to turn the key to the right there was no resistance and didn’t stop at the ACC location or activate and of the electronics. When I entered the key it binged at me for an open door but that was it. I can turn on the dome lights and headlights. Any help would be greatly appreciated

 

Almost sounds like your ignition switch is broken or not recognizing the transponder chip in the key.

 

I tried my spare key and valet key with no luck. Just happened out of the blue with no warning or signs whatsoever. Any idea what the next steps would be?

 

Are there any locksmiths in your area that do vehicle work? They might be able to take a look and see if the ignition just needs to be replaced/ programmed.

 

I reached out to a couple prior to posting this and really didn’t get much except check the electronic transmission and see if it somehow became disconnected

 

This is too funny, I drove home from work yesterday, got home, checked the mail, went inside and put my stuff away and went back out to check my Air Conditioner since it wasn’t blowing cold as I am used to. Opened the door, pull the hood release and raised the hood. Went to start my 4Runner and got one light beep when installing the key and when I turned the key nothing….. not even a click. So I used my power pack, hooked it up to the battery and it started but only stayed running for about 10 seconds and shut off. No “Check Engine” light nothing. I put a meter on my battery and it reads 12.61 volts. I did notice that my radio memory was erased along with the time on the clock. I just shut the hood and decided to look at it later. I will report what I find when I start troubleshooting. I am suspecting a dead cell in the battery. My alternator is only a year old but still a possibility.

 

Update- my daughter pulled the battery and had it tested and the battery is good. Time for more troubleshooting.

 

My daughter re-installed the battery and started it and everything is now working, I believe my starter is going bad since it is hot here and it’s original with 283k miles. Since I have other vehicles to drive I will drive them and test the 4Runner close to home in case the problem re-occurs.
