Thanks for adding me, I have a Green 97 Limited that's a little beat up on the outside but still running fine at 190k miles until it froze today, for no reason, it's not freezing and it didn't overheat. So I'm thinking I might get another 4Runner, bought the first one because it had the biggest sunroof available, you could stand up in the front seat through the moonroof.

It wont turn over even manually. When I turn the key, the motor lurches as it tries to turn over, but just goes thud. Mechanic tried to pull on the motor by hand, with a wrench, it should at least turn but slowly, if nothing is wrong. Would not budge. Last time I turned it off it was running a little rough, white smoke from exhaust and it chugged when starting. I thought it was something that needed fixed so I let it sit for a week until the garage had an opening. Went to start it and nothing. Brand new battery, ran just fine before. Mechanic says it just died of old age.

Yeah white smoke not good might of had a leak that lead to a seize. Mine was heading that way till I sent her in to a rebuild. only was a head gasket. But im over 200k runs like a champ. Transmission next tho.

Oh shit I know what it might be, you might be hyrolocked. Pull the spark plugs and try to manually turned the motor. Yours might be doing what mine did, Head gasket leak, coolent is going to a cylinder or more and will not allow the motor to move, Pull all the Spark plugs and try again. I bet that's your issue. White smoke is coolent buring.

    old age motor my ass.

Great idea. I talked to the mechanic and they suggested to leave it alone. It overheated badly once, and although they shaved the heads ( a different mechanic) and put in new gaskets, it has overheated easily since then. The mechanic said that when they shave the heads, only the top or cover can be shaved until its perfectly flat again, whereas the engine block, even if it is warped, cannot be shaved, and so even though there is a gasket, they blow easily becasue both gasket surfaces are not completely flat. This one is not worth saving. It is for sale.

Whaddayaknow, I went out to show a guy how it sounded when it wouldn't start, and it started. After I had it on Craiglsit for $1000 and was about ready to give it away. Moisture problem for sure, of some kind.
