I'm not sure about other vehicles, but no other Toyota does it (that I'm aware of).

It's one of the reasons the 6th gen has been taking longer than expected.......it was supposedly a last minute decision to add this particular feature.

If the fuel and battery capacities are decent, I imagine you could get really long range going from electric, to gas (recharging electric a little while driving), then back, etc.

    Hopefully the rumors are true.

I wouldn't hesitate to get one.

I live in Rhode Island, we typically don't get crazy storms, but people do go crazy filling up the night before one. For that reason I try to keep mine half of a tank too.

I suppose if one is in their habit of home charging their EV overnight, theoretically they would start out with a full tank everyday. I also wonder if one had sufficient room for solar panels and perhaps some sort of a wind turbine setup, if they could generate their own electricity to charge their own EV.

I think both will work out to have their pros and cons in different situations. What would more concern me about a mass evacuation is traffic. Every disaster movie I've ever seen, it's always a situation where traffic is just completely stalled on all the roads out of whatever city they're escaping. Somehow the protagonist always seems to escape, because they've commandeered a helicopter or are on a dirt bike or similar. Maybe that's the answer right there, make sure you have a fully fueled up helicopter and/or dirt bike on hand at all times, lol.

Seems like a pretty good rationalization for buying a dirt bike.

We lose about 10 miles on battery charge in the winter, 50ish to 40ish. And use a bit more when turning on defrost, however depending on how you turn on defrost, the engine might come on. And we charge every night, plug it in and it’s scheduled to be full at 7am, if not overridden.

The Prime we can switch between hybrid or EV with the push of a button. Hybrid is a rocket if you get into it, did it today.

Well, I have friends in Tampa. They have a 4R and a Model Y.
Power is out right, it has been for about 6 hours. Model Y is at 90%, the 4R is tank full.
Winds, rain, but the dog is sleeping like a baby. We keep txting at a minimum to conserve battery power.
    So far so good.

My Mom and her BF have a home on Pine Island. The road to get there is washed out. My mom referred me to a Facebook page from the area. These are some images from their neighborhood.

No official word yet on how much damage they had. But, from the looks of things It could be significant. They are on a canal.

in my experience most hybrids run smaller engines; ICE only would be an insufficient power plant, but you can get by nevertheless even if you have no battery charge. if Toyota offers the hybrid twin turbo V6 offered in the Tundra I think all most many some would be happy campers, but i'm guessing any hybrid 4R comes with a 4cylinder plant.

    Not going to happen.

If the hybrid comes with the same turbo 4 cylinder that we are supposed to get, it shouldn't be an issue. That motor makes way more torque and at way lower RPMs than our current V6. So, even the non-hybrid version is going to blow the doors off our current 4Runners.

We have a 4cyl hybrid Sienna; no idea if this is what they want to put in the 4R. It's fine but doesn't wow.

I was referring to the 2.4 l turbo 4 cylinder that Lexus is using. So, no, it is not the same thing.

Well I have 220, a 90amp breaker to the box in the detached garage. So charging is not a problem. I’m more worried about the trees here. I’m having some twenty dead limbs cut off of four trees tomorrow around noon. Winds should be here later in the evening.

Gasoline engines didn't help these people.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Rita#Texas

I-45 near the Harris/Montgomery line is 1 mile from my home. My neighbor worked for Sysco. They had an 18 wheeler in the Walmart lot passing out water. I crossed 45 on the Louetta bridge. As far as I could see both to the north and south traffic heading north was at a standstill.

A hay burner might have gotten through...

Did people with electric vehicles fare better than people with ICE vehicles in this situation? Not sure what you're getting at. It seems to me like excessive traffic was the problem, not what type of vehicle people were driving.

The point is that in some extreme instances it doesn't matter what you drive, you're stuck.

I don't understand the angst and hostility among some gas engine fans. Don't want an EV, don't buy one.

Eventually gasoline and diesel engines will go the way of the buggy whip. As EV technology matures it will become better and cheaper. When internal combustion automobile technology was 30 years only rich people owned cars, cars were not reliable and gas stations were few and far between, especially outside of cities.

I'm an old man. I'll never buy another vehicle in my lifetime. My gas powered 4 runner will be passed on to someone in the family when I go.

But if I was a younger man and could get an electric or hybrid 4Runner I'd jump on it...

Yes all of this is primarily true in an evac. But some people feel that when the dust settles from the traffic, it might be easier to find/carry extra gas as opposed to a charge.

Several hundred thousand people in SW Florida will not be charging even an RC car for weeks and months. Maybe w portable power generation? Certainly not with permanent wind and solar. Finding gasoline won't be easy for these people either, but at least possible.

The possible mandates to eliminate ICE sales in 10 to 12 years could be about 10 years too early.

Depends on a lot of variables that just arent ironed out yet. Yes technology moves quickly, but to sort out the infrastructure for a hundred million vehicles or more? Work/support vehicles on EV will be quite a bit longer.

None of the resistance to EV really started until the mandate narrative and some of the negative attitudes toward ICE in general. Which has helped develop the modern and convenient world we enjoy here in the US. Some of the attitude against EV is unwarranted also. Two sides of the coin as the saying goes.

Hopefully this will all get worked out sooner than later, but a lot of people don't want to just assume it's going to be as easy as the claims of all EV.
As far as myself, hybrid is a seemingly good bet.

imo the environmental impacts of battery production/recycling aren't being considered responsibly, but I digress as this thread is not about that topic.

One thing I am proud of is that this thread has remained relatively civil, which is way better than most of the other EV threads I've been a part of.

    Yes, that's true.

But, once the traffic finally breaks up, wouldn't you still want the best chance of getting out of the evacuation area?

Where is all of this angst and hostility? I don't see it.

All I see is a conversation about the pros and cons of ICE VS electric vehicles in an emergency evacuation.

Just because people think that ICE vehicles are better in a situation doesn't mean they hate EV's.

Edit: I have seen a few comments in some of these threads where people seem to have an excessive dislike for electric vehicles. But, it seems like this thread has been pretty civil.

    Maybe I missed something.. :notsure:

The hybrid should be here in 2 years.

I'd gladly drive a hybrid 4runner and get better fuel economy.

But, electric vehicles aren't any good for how I travel, so that's not an option. Doesn't mean I hate them, or have some sort of angst. They just can't do what I need a vehicle to do.
