Who knows how to recharge and/or refill the AC system? I know you can still get the freon, I think it's R15 but nobody will deal with it and tells me I have to replace the whole system at an average cost of $1000.00, anybody? I'm also in need of a steering gear box, suggestions?

You don't need to replace your whole system, just retrofit it. Youtube is your friend. Biggest thing is removing the old refrigerant and oils from the system.

Low pressure side is 21-28 psi high pressure side is 206-213. I just recharged my system with a couple of cans I got off eBay even comes with an adapter to upgrade the low pressure side port if you need it.

Pittsburg Harbor Freight AC gauge manifold kit listed above works a charm.
