Unfortunately I have 20 years left on my mortgage BUT its my second house in Hawaii so I'll live with it. Can't retire on my 401k yet but by the time I hit 60 I should be fine. Think I'm on track only being 39.

Think the best thing is to have parents the grilled me about being responsible with money since I knew what it was. All I hear now days from younger kids (I still think I'm young) is "living my best life" while blowing their money.

 

No, traded the taco and only needed 15k loan for the runner. And used Credit union. I walked in to the dealership with a 15k check and the keys and title for the taco, left with the runner and an extra grand or so on my credit card as they didn’t give me when original agreed value for the taco. They tried to squeeze me on the taco, to the point I wanted to walk, but the wife was done and just wanted it over with.

 

you should consider refinancing, get that payment down some more.

Ah, OK, that makes sense now. I did the same thing, almost identically. Traded the 17 Taco for the 22 4Runner, and used a credit union loan since it was cheaper than any auto loans or financing they were offering. I got lucky with a settlement and was able to pay the credit union off later that year.

As soon as Pelosi passed the "Inflation Reduction Act" I knew that we, as citizens were in trouble. I lived through inflation in the 70s so I knew what was coming. I paid off my note on the 4Runner one year later.

Additionally people are happy to say they don't have payments and after a few posts of that, those who do have payments are less likely to speak up as they will feel "less than".

Try to get into a home of your own as soon as you can. It is the only way to control your cost of living and not be at the mercy of landlords. Owning a home will also likely be its own nest egg over time as far as an investment.

I'm in a 4Runner because it's but one in a string of bad financial decisions. At least I bought it used. Can't imagine paying new MSRP for this thing.

 

I'm 38. Been telling people around my age we'll never be anle to own a home so why not just Yolo all your money in the stock market and hope to try to get 50% or more down on a home, or even pay for the house. Is my strategy.

 

Dealers typically make an incremental profit on the financing component of a deal. Very often you can negotiate a lower purchase price with financing versus a cash purchase.... and then just pay off the loan in full after a month. Alternatively, if you are buying a vehicle for cash, I'd suggest making that known to the dealer only after you settle on a purchase price which assumes financing. I just did this with the purchase of a new Silverado and the disappointed surprise on the salesman's face was evident when I told him I'd be paying cash after we agreed on a price.

 

$58,000 CAD ($41,200 USD) owing on mine after one year of ownership. I took the longest term possible as I knew I would be buying a new house shortly. Just purchased a new build which will be ready spring 2025. We have lots of equity so will be paying off both of ours vehicles, putting 20% on the new house, and will pay the maximum 10% overpayment on the mortgage. Our 30 year mortgage will be paid off in 13 years.

 

I did the cash thing when I bought a used runner in 2020. The salesperson tried hard to not let me know they were pissed. But the I see you brought a check with you that I didn’t know you were going to do comment, verified I was doing my wallet a favor.

What’s crazy, there are folks with tons of money, but shit credit scores because they never use credit.

when I was buying a house, I closed up a bunch of my credit cards and what not, thinking it showed I was responsible and didn’t have access to credit to be stupid with. Destroyed my credit score.

 

You are absolutely right! I keep a few open and just put a few charges on them and then prepay the bill. That actually helps improve the score.

Keep accounts open with low or no balance. Credit history is also counts towards score.

My son is an authorized user on my cc for gas only. Once hes done with high school he can get his own. But its still a start.

 

That's what I've been doing for the last 10 years. I make sure I keep "revolving" credit. I put all my monthly bills (well, not all, but most) on a credit card and then pay that bill off in full every month. So I don't have any interest, plus it shows I actively use it. It also shows "on time payment history"

That is about 40% of your credit score. Making on time payments will boost your score (or demolish it!).

I have a good mix, or so I'm told of credit-usage. My score fluctuates between 815 - 840.

Basically we pay with credit cards for everything, I got sick of paying credit card prices and not getting the rewards, but pay off every month. I’ve tried the use only a little thing, then my limits got reduced. So now I try to rotate cards.

 

Thats weird because I use mine little and pay it off and they jack up my limit.

I just got notice last month they added another $3k to my limit. Guess they trying to get me to use it.

 

They typically do that when you put large sums on there or even max it out and see that you can either make payments it can sometimes pay it off.

I'll call in every couple years to get my limits raised because they don't auto raises it for me anymore since I haven't run a balance in a lot of years.

Back when I was 21 I ran up 22k on a card. They just kept raising the limit every few months.

2022 ORP w/10K miles. Book is still in the high $30Ks so I feel pretty good about that.
