Anyone attempt cosmoline on the outer frame and fluid film on the inside frame. I'm wondering if this is a horrible idea?

why not cosmoline everywhere? The stuff is very durable. Smells like military surplus, but durable ;)

the only thing is I dont know if its safe for rubber or plastic.

Considering all options. I have 6 cans or cosmoline I bought a while back but no way of getting good coverage inside the frame since it just comes with a little straw. I figured a couple cans of fluid film and the 360 wand would be good enough for the inner frame rails. Was just curious if anyone has ever used the two products on the same truck in difference applications. My guess is the fluid film would creep out the inner frames and cause issues with the cosmoline but was curious if anyone tried this

Some questions. 1-How bad is the smell? I park in the garage and work in there often with the door closed. Will it stink up the entire space? 2) Does it worsen or help rodents chewing on the wires/entering the vehicle?

it does have a smell, but 95% of it goes away after about a week. it will not stink up the whole area lol, no it will actually deter them as they do not like the smell of it as its a turn off to them.

Better question, is it worth dealing with the odor for a short time. The answer-hell yes.

and I have read somewhere that it does help deter rodents. I have started spraying all my vehicles just for that reason. I have also used wool wax and PB surface shield, and would say they all are worth it.

Wool Wax smells better then Fluids Film. Did my wife Tacoma last weekend, smell was gone after two days.

You can smell the FF about a foot away from the vehicle. I don't find the smell objectionable. It smells better than new tires, for example.

It doesn't do anything with mice. Use a proper repellant like Tomcat teak tree spray under the hood.

Biggest drawback with FF is it attracts dirt. Same with Krown/Rust Check/Corrosion Free. For that reason, I use cosmoline on my Tacoma because it's mostly a trail rig.

It's a lot better. And if you power wash the undercarriage after a wheeling trip. Any dirt and mud washes off easily while the cosmoline stays on unabated.

I'll be getting our truck professionally coated at some point in the fall before the winter hits and we start seeing salt on the roads. After that I'll be doing fluid film on my own at home for 2 years and then get it professionally coated again, rinse and repeat.

^No. Same spraying process. If you're crawling under the truck to spray it, cosmoline is easier to work with, doesn't stain your clothes as easily.

I thought it was a paint? I thought there was more prep? The FF, WW, and SS all creep into the hard to get places, I didn’t think cosmoline did that

^Cosmoline flows and creeps when you spray it just like FF. After some time cosmoline dries to a soft film. Buy yourself a rattlecan and try it out, either Cosmoline-branded RP-342 or the very similar CRC 06026. CRC is available in more stores and may be cheaper, but the nozzle can't accept a straw. I ended up putting a FF nozzle on the CRC can

I like the black color too. Might have to go this route.

So than spraying brake parts and exhaust-everything else under there fair game?

^I always go for the orange translucent version. You can spray the exhaust and brake backing plates, just not the rotors obviously. If you have upgraded shocks with exposed shafts, avoid spraying on the shafts. Overspray on the shafts can be cleaned up with Spray Nine.

Do you know if the CRC cosmoline version smells like military surplus rifles? Was thinking about adding this to my inventory to try it out, but not sure if the smell would ever go away.

Would you say it is tougher than woolwax in terms of being wiped away? Does it build with progressive coats like dirty woolwax does?

^The CRC version smells the same as the Cosmoline-branded one. Smell goes away after a month or so in my experience. I don't have experience with Woolwax, but cosmoline is waaay tougher than FF/Rust Check/Corrosion Free/WD40-Spray & Stay against wiping and pressure washing. At the end of the wheeling season, I pressure wash away remaining dirt from the frame and suspension, then spray cosmoline on top of the old cosmoline.

I am not sure if it has ever been mentioned but I wonder how FF reacts with the OEM asphalt internal undercoating that I was told (Dealership) Toyota uses?

Would FF, or any other oil for that matter, siting on asphalt for years and years break down the asphalt?

I just FF'd the 2 days ago for $153.00 out the door...

I'm not trying to be confrontational but, I don't care about how "tough" any coating is. All I know is that Fluid Film prevents rust and I get it re-applied every October & there is no rust under my 19' 4R. I live in southwestern, PA & even tho' we haven't had a lot of snow the last few winters, the road crews still OVER salt the roads around here & pre-treat with brine. (so next years allocation of treatment is the same or increased) I just had FF re-applied yesterday (5th consecutive year) and I am amazed that there is zero rust underneath.

Toyota doesn’t use any “asphalt internal coating” on 4runner. I’m sure that’s made up on the spot by whoever at the dealer said that. The frames are painted, with paint. I’d imagine it’s sufficient for any environment, except where corrosive de-icing agents are used.

I imagine you are correct but I do know they changed something up here in the Northeast.

They do not rot anywhere near the way they used to rot 15 years ago.....and the salt has only gotten WAY worse up here now that they quit using actual rock salt.

Are you 100% certain Toyota uses ONLY paint in the places you can't see?

Whatever they are doing it is 100% better than it used to be and 250% better than GMC and Ford do.

At least on mine, it’s 100 percent paint on the frame. I’ve even used a borescope and the paint looks the same inside and outside frame.
