IMG_1975.jpg IMG_1972.jpg IMG_1658.jpg Hello everybody. Im starting a build of my 87 4runner and figured i could use all the help i could get. I bought betty (my 4runner) about 6 months ago before i left the country for a while. Ive always wanted an older toyota of sorts because if taken care of they will last you forever. If there is one thing i hate its a car payment. The truck died on me about a month ago she was burning oil severely and ended up having blown a head gasket as well. So, i am currently taking the engine out documenting where things go. I almost have all the accessories taken off and hoses disconnected. Now im trying to figure out how to get that rear bolt that sits right behind the head off to disconnect from the tranny. Back to what i was saying. It was either i buy the rebuilt engine from 22re performance or rebuild. I chose rebuild because its something i have always wanted to do. This is my first time so hopefully all goes well and smooth. The guy before me clearly was trying to make this a project truck the inside panels have all been replaced with terrible wood work things arent bolted down either so every bump sounds like the truck will fall apart. The center console is torn out and has some more interesting woodwork. Ill post pics of it shortly. Shifter is incredibly loose has no driver side door panel and im using vise grips to roll my windows up and down. All in all i love it. I will probably be pestering you guys soon with a ton if questions. Thanks.

Welcome aboard! Nice color combo. Parts are becoming harder to find so start searching CL. Good luck with the rebuild.

    For suspension I've used lowrangeoffroad.com
    Allprooffroad.com trail-gear.com 4crawler.com
For drivetrain I haven't really used any since my engine is still going strong at 235K miles but lceperformance.com has it all. I'll be buying a header from them soon.

So currently disassembling inspecting for damage and all that great jazz. Doing some research on what to look for. Trying to crunch some numbers and whats cost effecient rebuilding or buying a new engine. Talked to mr putney at 22re performance and he seems like a viable option. In the time that it takes him to build will also give me ample time to fix the engine bay up and solder some wires back together. Maybe do some front frame work.
