I'm running a 3.5 gallon Fuel-Pax mounted to the C4 Ladder. I have it mounted higher up on the ladder so the hatch will stay up when filled with gas. It was mounted lower but found out the hatch wouldn't stay open if it was cold outside. BTW I did replace the lift gate struts.

    https://trail4runner.com/2019/11/04/heavy-duty-4runner-lift-gate-strut-upgrade/

I too have the RIGd Ultraswing and love it.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Remember, jerry cans were designed so that the average grunt could refill their jeep, tank, APC, and so forth. Usually with a lit cigarette dangling from their mouth. They wanted it to work quickly, in case they were under fire, easily (grunts tend to not be the sharpest knife in the block), no offence intended to any of my brothers with an 0311 MOS, or any of them at all for that matter, and safely. Not good to have your personnel catching fire trying to refill their vehicles. Bad for morale, at the least

    Have fun, all!

Heck, 5 gallons, times 6.8 lbs/gal, roughly, about 34 or 35 ponds. Add in the weight of the can etc, maybe close to 40 lbs. Heck, *I* can still lift 40 lbs. Especially with a handle on it, like jerry cans have.
Speaking of, you know why there are 3 handles? One in the middle to allow a single man to carry it, the two on the outside so two people can carry them. Think about it: 2 people can carry 3 cans that way. One in the middle, one on each side. A tank crew, 4 men and a tank commander, could carry 6 cans to their vehicle quickly that way, drop the empties, or carry them back to the fuel dump for refilling, and head back with another 5 or 6. Makes for fast, efficient refueling from a fuel dump.

    Have fun all!

So, whats the verdict on fuel cans, bags, rotopax, etc... in the spare tire well under the vehicle? Does anything fit INSIDE the diameter of the actual spare wheel/tire?

My verdict is that Wavian cans rule. I have actually thought about trying to fashion some sort of bracket to hold it up with the spare tire carrier.

PLUS $50.00 shipping 'each' was the final disqualifier, for me.

Decided to stick with my GOTT(Rubbermaid) cans of days gone bye? Likely the best plastic fuel can ever made. imo

Still have a 5 gal and a 2.5 gal that are in great shape.

I have carried the Wavian can inside the cab from Wisconsin to Florida. When I finally opened it in Florida there was substantial pressure built up, and some gas sprayed out. But, I never smelled even a hint of fuel on the entire drive, in spite of an 80° increase in outside temperatures.

That said, it's Ideal to store them outside the vehicle.

Used to carry up to 10 each 5 gallon GOTT cans in the car hauler while encountering all different altitudes and heat ranges. Not once did I ever enter the trailer and smell 'gas'. Important side note - always 'fill' a gas can to the top and seal it well and it'll serve one well. Under-filled. Gas cans. Expand.

    That's surprising!

But, can they handle falling out of the truck and being run over? ;)

The nozzles on the newer plastic gas cans are a pain in the ass. They're supposed to be safer, but I feel like I spill a lot more then I used to with the old style plastic ones.

That Trailed tank looks interesting. Currently using 2x RotoPax 4gal on the roof.

I've found myself needing them a couple of times, mostly due to bad planning on my part. There are times where I'll push on to a location knowing I'll need to use the spare gas to make it past the point of no return. Instead, I could make a slight detour and fill the main tank and add an hour or two to the trip.

The only time I definitely needed them was on the drive to Panama.

Do the rotopax tanks tolerate being flat on their sides? Are they designed with that in mind?

i was looking at tge midwest metal jerry cans. Devil is in the details. Tanks are obviously stout but the how the plastic screw on caps mated was wonky on at least one I looked at. We get these stupid nozzles mandated, and can’t assure the fricken cap works all of them all the time lol

i remember I had a kolpin brand flat mountable tank, plastic. After a few years, it split down the seam and leaked in my garage.

They have great potential but lack proper shielding. Think Pinto! imo

Based upon everything I've read. They are designed to be stored flat, but must be watched and vented as needed.

I used a 4 gallon horizontal roto-pack on a 4 wheeler for several years while in Wyoming. It never did leak summer or winter but it did kind of get a permanent bulge:D

I ended up going with the Victory 4x4 side mount. I initially wanted to mount a 4 gal Rotopax but figured that may be overkill for what I need and settled on just carrying 2 gals on my trips.

Did you have to vent them periodically. I've heard of them "blowing up" or bulging from changes in altitude.

They do bulge, and yeah, I have vented them. However, I've also ignored them, never had one blow up. So, I don't what exactly Rotopax says about it. I've been using the same 2 4gal units for a number of trips. I have no idea how long they really last when exposed to the elements.

I haven't really read anything negative about them.

I'd still feel nervous about storing fuel on the roof in direct sunlight, but that's probably just me being paranoid.

The downside to storing gas on your roof is if you have a roll over. You can often still drive out after rolling, but doing so with an interior soaked in gas is not cool. Storing gas on your rear bumper reduces the chance of this happening.
