    Some cool ideas here.

I was thinking about rigging up some sort of way to carry my Wavian can underneath in the void left by the spare tire. I'm sure a rotopax container could be supported by the tire carrier with some ingenuity. Depending on how/where you off-road, this might not be the safest place for them though.

If not for potential damage, it seems like a perfect spot. With the spare relocated, that's a lot of unused space. Plus, it's down low, which is the only place i really like adding weight.

And, the mounting options they give us have yet to be fully explored. Well worth the investment in my book.

I saw those at a mall crawler show in Chicago. Full roof rack, loaded, and stuff hanging off the sides.. I had the standard initial reaction of "I need all of that!!", but then I remembered that I'm trying to keep it simple and light as possible. Getting 12 MPG and raising the COG are 2 things I'm trying to avoid.

Yes! I hadn't thought of it, but that could be annoying seeing that in the side mirror.

Eh, I don't think you'd notice it. Side mirrors should only barely view that area, if at all; and I don't think one can really see out the driver's side widow there at all from the driver's position. Would look cool to you in the side mirror anyway, don't lie. :) Also doubt it would affect MPG's much if you're in a situation where you are taking / using this tank (off-roading speeds).. but I guess if you wanted to take a really long trip and a lot of it was on the interstate, it could be an issue.

Forgive me guys, what's the point of y'all's rear tire carriers? I always assumed someone with one of those was extreme, and must blow out more than one tire regularly on their excursions (in other words, I judged them for being silly). Now I see that many of you are ... moving your single spare from the factory location to the aftermarket carrier? If not to have a spare gas tank fab'd up in that location under the vehicle, then why?

I see a lot of Aussie guys with aux gas tanks installed. If I really felt like my factory 20 GAL tank wasn't enough for the adventures I went on (totally jealous of you guys that must be going way off the grid), I would just shell out whatever it took to have a real tank mounted. The 4Runner doesn't have much extra room underneath, if at all, so I suppose something in the spare tire area would fit the bill and yes, relocate the spare elsewhere - hitch/bumper carrier or perhaps roof.

It's still decoration, regardless of fuel, when you are driving around in the city in which you live... lol.

    No. It would look annoying.

I have to drive 3 hours to get to any sort of trails. Fuel economy is always a consideration for me.

-Some oversized spares don't fit underneath.

-personally, I hate having a dirty spare. Plus I always have to remove it to clear mud from off-roading.

-having the spare underneath could cause it to get damaged if you run rocky trails.

    -Instagram points

I do agree that having an extra spare is another good reason for those things.

Unless you run across someone who has run out of gas. :notsure:

In my case, I tend to leave all of my off-roading, camping, and fishing gear in the 4Runner most of the summer. I skip town almost every weekend, so it's easier to leave everything ready to go.

^ Would be nice if that was closer to half the price, but what can ya do? That definitely looks like the solution for anyone that regularly needs additional fuel to me. Now, if you're looking for more of an "emergency" fuel tank.. how many gallons is enough? I'd probably grab a 5 gal. or less tank, and put it wherever I could. For me, those side hanging panels are absolutely out because my vehicle's sides are scraping trees the whole way down the trail.. the same goes for the roof, but that's still where I'd probably put some sort of flat tank. Eventually I absolutely see a full-length roof rack in my future. I love my TRD Pro rack for little camping outings, but it's no "overland" roof rack, that's for sure! Everyone has their shit in a different place, of course lol.

+1 on scraping the side mount on trees. I totally see that happening on the tight trails I've been on.

I'm slowly moving forward with my ladder mount solution. Idea would be only to mount the spare fuel when either going on a long road trip or off roading. I wouldn't want fuel on there 24/7.

Agreed about the side racks. Some of the trails are narrow here, and some have a low ceiling as well. This is why I'm moving everything inside the 4Runner as much as possible. Weight distribution is also a consideration. I do prefer the idea of keeping extra fuel outside, though.

Yeah as much as I'm not a fan of ladders on every single 4Runner, it seems like one of the best places to mount a few gallons, for sure.

    While we are here....

Are there any hood mounting options for the 4Runner? Obviously it's super mall-crawler-esque, but it does look kinda cool on Jeeps. Just curious. I imagine it's tough with the hood scoop.. plus the hood already sits kind of high and beefy (which I like).

    https://4wdadventuresusa.com/hood-rack-toyota-4runner-5th-1/

It's for traction boards, but I'm sure it could be adapted for fuel cans.

    Personally, I think it awful!

I put mine on the roof (I opted to go without the ladder). Tons of room up there with a full length rack.

Wow, that hood rack is hideous. And way overpriced. And doesn't look like it works on proper (hood scoop'd) 4Runners.. ;-)

Definitely not as cool looking at the one I saw on a Jeep.
I was thinking something that would hold two boards stacked on top of eachother.

LOL at strapping gas tanks to a hood rack.. that just sounds like a bad idea somehow..

    The hood actually closes. :D:eek::D:eek::D

I was going to bungee cord it to the grill but this works so much better.

How would I clean the side window with those cans in the way? The radio reception might not be so good either. I use satellite though. Good weekend everyone!

Can you mount 2, 2Gal rotopax on a gobi rack ladder on the 4R? 2Gal of gas is about 12lbs.

also I see the interlocking Rotopax is sold out, but the non locking 2 gal pack is available. Any major differences other than the design?

lastly, better to mount on the rack laying flat?
