Engine is way louder than it used to be. It sounds the same but just amplified...

I have a 2000 4runner with no 4wd and 208,000 miles. It's been very well kept up, but one day, I was driving up a mountain to work, and the engine was still a bit cold. Suddenly, the engine just got way louder, and the check engine light came on. I took it to a mechanic nearby, and he said that it was some gasket. He said it isn't anything that will put me on the side of the road, but I gotta say it's annoying having my runner this loud. I have to get it inspected soon, so I would like to fix it to get this light off. I really just wanted a second opinion on what the mechanic said. Thanks!!

Probably an exhaust gasket. It's an easy fix, except that the bolts are probably rusted pretty bad. You can attempt on your own, or use a trusted muffler shop. The part is probably just a few bucks.

Also, get a code reader. It's near impossible for us to give advice without codes. Code readers are dirt cheap and clue you right in to where to start.

I agree, from the description, it's probably an exhaust leak.
