I posted all my steps back in 2019 on some other thread on this website. I pretty much just scuffed all the emblems, cleaned them, placed them on screws to pop them up, did about 5 or 6 light coats over spraying on the left and right by 3” or so, and rotated the board 90 degrees between coats.

I had black overlays for the c pillar and didn't like them. I eventually settled for red overlays front/rear and new c pillar emblems with red trd and black offroad. To each their own

I filled in the extra areas of the overlay with touch up paint but still didn't like the result. I got my replacement emblems on either ebay or etsy, happy with them. PITA to get the old ones off (glue/tape) but some goo gone and elbow grease did the trick. Make sure to tape off the edges of the old emblems if you want them in the same spot after taking the old ones off

I got the black out overlays for mine. There was so little chrome on my ORP that I thought it looked better blacked out.

i found this to be true with the cheap set i purchased from 4Runnerlifestyle. they have since been removed and thrown in the trash, aside from the sombrero which sits flush. i've glanced at a few local 4Runners with what appear to be the OEM overlays, and they appear to sit flush with no chrome visible from the sides. its just hard to swallow paying ~$120-160 for the OEM kit.

so currently, i have chrome letters and a black sombrero. kinda looks like i can't make up my mind. lol.

I ordered a OEM set off ebay (a guy was selling them for around $75). They fit perfect and there is no chrome visible. Looks like he still has some available. Here's a link to them - https://www.ebay.com/itm/265728744166

interesting. i wonder why i find 2 completely different part numbers for the kits (understanding there are different numbers for the SR5 kit vs the TRD Off-Road kit).

    Part Number: PT9488918002
    Supersession(s): PT948-89180-02

    vs

@ReRunner - gotcha. with my cheap-o kit, the depth of each letter was different. super cheesy and a waste of $40.

plus they started lifting in a tad over a month. so the tape was junk too.

i was hoping the OEM kit would sit flush with the liftgate panel.

or the depth of the letters aren't designed to accommodate the tape thickness.

Hey there, I chose to wrap my logos and silver trim. Turned out pretty good.

Does anyone know how long the OEM blackout kit survives before weathering ?

    View Blackout Emblem Overlays

Black plastic changes color rapidly in the Sun.

The vehicle been new. Would be disastrous if overlays loses its gloss. Cant be removed, except you change the underlying logos/emblems etc.

    Advise

    Cheers

I think you would be able to heat them up and peel off, I did with an Amazon set. Unless that Toyota tape is far superior....

That's actually good that there is a small gap on the edges. If the overlay was completely flush to the paint it'd scrape/rub it and technically couldn't even be pressed on properly. I just installed the OEM kit and the fitment is spot on.
We just had to have our 21' ORP hatch repainted under warranty as the black rear garnish on the 5th gen (NON SR5's) sits to tight at the corners and it rubs the paint off. This is a known issue, and I'm sure many of the folks on here have the issue as well. It doesn't stand out unless you have a lighter color vehicle. So, all that to say, slight gaps between plastic pieces and painted body parts is a good thing. I wouldn't expect an overlay that's held on with 3m tape to sit completely flush.

Seems its safe to assume you are not pleased with the lettering overlays.
I ordered and installed the OEM nightshade emblem only version instead.

Looks great combined with my magnetic gray colors.

Has anyone purchased black overlays lately? Seems like some of the recommended versions (R4T) don’t exist anymore.
