Literally as I getting ready to go to work I noticed a small bubble right next to the plastic door still plate on my front drivers side door. I scratched it with my fingernail and it was all rusty. I can’t post any pictures till tomorrow because I have my commuter car. But has anyone else dealt with this? And how would I properly repair it? I am planning to take the plastic will plate off this week...

Is it better to sand down or use a wire brush? And as far as sealing should I coat it with anything before I use touch up paint?

since this is a very small rust spot looks like the plastic strip had a high spot that worn down the paint in that rust area. removal of that plastic piece is tough you need the plastic pry tools Harbor freight has them ..

use a small piece of metal to carefully remove the rust. wipe it down with mineral spirits then use a primer paint touch up .. do it 3X .. do not use too much on each prime. sand the edge of the plastic with some fine sand paper so that plastic is smooth.. then after a few days put the color touch up on that spot .. give it a week before it is hardened ...

I am guessing this is from stepping on the plastic trim piece getting in and out of the vehicle? This caused the paint to wear off so i am not sure the dealership would cover that.

I agree that the dealership probably isn't going to do anything but I feel at that point it will be documented though a dealership and I will most definitely go through corporate as well. My opinion is that a plastic sill that was factory installed should not cause this much damage on an above average cleaned vehicle. Meaning frequent washes year round which included all possible areas for rust..doorjams/sills etc etc. If its documented I will have grounds in the future if there is even a recall or something similar. I am almost thinking about going to an auto body shop to have it professionally fixed if Toyota doesn't take care of it. Just for the purpose of having it air fingers quote "professionally" fixed.

I know on most enthusiast forums like this one, we love to bash the dealerships and treat them like they are vile cash sucking monsters who wants nothing more than to rape your family and destroy your vehicle...

    BUT

Outside of documentation (which is a great start) some dealerships out there are helpful, some are worth less than a wet newspaper. It's worth talking to your service department regardless. Ultimately you're right, no reason for a factory door sill to cause that damage to a factory door on factory paint.

Ive had good luck gixing rust by taking it down tobthe metal with phosproric acid. Kills the rust and leaves s primable surface.
There are several spray versions or you can buy it in bulk.

Probably not electrolysis. It isnt happening atcany joints ir dissimilar metals.
Sitting on 4 rubber tires isolates you from outside " charges". The battery source has nothing to do with it.

I know but they do install Zinc Anodes on engines/metal that come in contact with water. So by adding one somewhere to attract/absorb the corrosion is a thought?

I called my dealership and they are awesome! My paperwork is getting submitted within the next few days. And I am dropping the truck off next week.

    Just so all know...
You would be surprised @ how thin the paint is on a Toyota. When we took ours in for the Xpel wrap with 900 mile on it. It still took $900 in paint corrections (some caused by the dealer). Anyhow, the Xpel installer said Toyota paint is 0.02" inches. He said it is the only flaws with Toyota's. I may be a little off as that was 6 months ago & I have a lot going on.
    Joey,
I hope your dealership helps you as they should!

The dealership actually has been awesome so far. That told me they are contacting corporate first but the told me it will be fixed. They were surprised at the year, color, and level of damage. And they clearly saw how well kept my truck is so clearly it’s nothing I caused.

I got my truck back today and I am very pleased. The auto body guys weren’t the cleanest but I have to say Crestmont Toyota in Pompton Plains NJ did right by me. You can barely tell it was painted. Not all dealerships are horrible...there is hope.

Congratulations on the repair! I am glad the dealership stood behind you.
Any before & after shots? Also, any problem areas to look out for, or was this a door alignment issue?
    Much thanks,

Here are the fixed pictures. I got real lucky when I dropped the truck off. A representative for Toyota quality assurance happened to overhear my conversation with the service manager and asked if he could look at it. He said he never heard or see anything like my problem on the 4Runner and he personally helped with the case. He helped get both front sills refinished and painted. If it wasn’t for the dealership and this gentleman fighting I believe Toyota would have told me to take a walk.

And they put some heavy duty clear plastic under the plastic so it doesn’t rub the paint again.AAF3C86A-CAE6-45BB-9EF5-F4E84CD3CACB.jpgFABD4224-D411-430E-AC44-EC1C05DF4636.jpg

Wow, they did a great job!
Hard to believe a truck that new would start rusting already. Do you live where they Salt roads, or where vehicles tend to rust?
I'd look over that truck carefully for anymore spots.
For future reference, whenever you see rust, be sure to sand it down (wire brush takes off the bulk, but you will want to remove as much as you can) all the way around it, even onto the solid metal along the edge of the rust spot. Of course if the dealership will cover it then that's #1.
I treat all the rust I encounter with this stuff called Ospho. It works magic, I believe I bought a bottle pretty cheap of Amazon. Turns the rust into another substance that you can sand or brush off. A few coats of it and rust will not come back.

Thanks I am always looking around for rust spots and things of that nature. I was pretty surprised myself especially how often I cleaned and waxed those areas but the NYC area gets heavily doused with salt for the lightest of storms. But in all honesty I will always have a concern for this particular 4Runner...maybe this will be the end of it. Luck really hasn’t been on my side with my 4Runner...I had this rust issue, my hitch is flaking very badly already, the middle of my drivers seat is heavily worn, and I need a front windshield to a chip, and my rear passenger side window has a huge gouge in it. Some of these can be attributed to quality in my opinion but I still love my truck.
