Do our 4runners have stop start tech?

We were talking about new vehicles at work and my boss mentioned stop start tech to save gas. He said all new cars have it. I don't see it on my 2022 sr5. I never notice the engine turn off while driving. The only time I've seen the truck turn itself off was if I let it run 10 minutes without driving like parked on beach playing tunes. Do the 4runners have it?

4Runners do not have Stop-Engine-at-Idle (in Drive - with vehicle a 0 mph) technology. This includes the Limited which has the most tech of all 4Runner models.

    Glad they don't BTW...

Nope, they do not have it. Maybe that's something the new 6th gens will offer?

I haven't heard of it. I would think there would be a few threads complaining about it by now.

My Chevy work truck has it. Super annoying, especially when you're trying to pull into traffic.

Even though your 4Runner is a current model year, one can't really think of the 4Runner as a "new" vehicle. It's basically a new 2010 vehicle, haha.

I knew hybrids do that but have not seen my 4runner do it since I bought it. Thanks.

Last thing in the world I need is to be crawling down some embankment and stop on the decent and the engine goes offline. I do not want that tech on my 4Runner. I had it in our 2017 Honda Pilot and couldn't tell a bit of difference at the gas pump when I left it bypassed (which you have to do manually each time you start the vehicle to disable it and then it turns on an annoying yellow light on the instrument panel) vs. when I left it on all the time. I hope on the 6th Gen 4R's they leave stuff like that for people who buy Hilanders.

I'm not saying it's bad tech, just that it's not the right tech for 4R's.

When I was first at the dealership for a 4Runner test drive, I joked to the salesman that we could drive the 4Runner right over the Prius parked in front of us. He wagged a finger at me and told me to show the Prius more respect, and explained that it is thanks to the Prius that 4Runners are not saddled with the Stop-Start system. Evidently there is a U.S. law that manufacturers must meet a target mph figure – not for each car, but for an average of all their cars. So, he said, it’s thanks to the Prius that we don’t need to have the Stop-Start.

I don’t know if his story is factual, but I enjoyed it.

(The lack of the Stop-Start feature was one of the things that helped me chose a 4Runner over a Wrangler)

Yes, it's CAFE - Corporate Average Fuel Economy. It's also the reason they equip 4WD models with such mild treaded tires A .5 MPG improvement really adds up when spread across the fleet average.

All those 50mpg Priuses balance out the 17 MPG 4Runner, Taco, Tundra, etc.

I'm so glad the 4r doesn't have that. Its the most annoying "gas saving" feature ever introduced.

Yeah. Makes sense in a hybrid, but not a fully gas vehicle. At least they mostly seem to be able to be switched off.

If the 6th Gen 4Runner has a hybrid option it almost certainly will have the start-stop feature. Hopefully it will be easy to disable it permanently, that is, not requiring it to be done at every start up.

Not available on the 4Runner. One of the reasons I bought my 4Runner. Swore I would never buy a vehicle with start/stop. Useless tech start/stop especially if you can't manually disable it which some you can't. Even if you can some require you to disable it every time you do an initial start. Hard on batteries, starter motors and engines. Most engine wear occurs on startup. If you had to boost start your car because of a bad battery what happens when you hit that first stoplight. What if your car becomes hard to start. No thankyou.

sadly, cars with this feature have it on by default every time you start the car and there is no way to fully remove the feature unless you switch over to a standalone ECU (assuming your engine is supported by one of these)

I totally agree, I’m not sold on the start/stop thing. I’ve driven rentals with it and it’s annoying.

For Wranglers with the auto stop-start feature there is a plug-and-play module available to defeat it.

“Disabling auto start/stop on your Jeep Wrangler JL couldn't be easier. This intelligent device restores your preference for auto start-stop automatically which eliminates the need to press the button after each ignition cycle.”

It was a tough decision. The Wrangler has solid axles front and rear, and can be had with 35 inch tires and front and rear lockers from the factory, a choice of axle ratios, and all terrain tires. It has lots of charisma too.

I chose the 4Runner for its reliability, a roof, and the tailgate window. ;-)

Haha, I came to pretty much the same conclusion when I was trying to choose between the two. If I lived out west or near good trails, I definitely would have went the other way.

Yeah I am so glad they don’t have it. I would guess government will pressure 6th Gen to get it

    It's a jeep thang :headbang:

I believe it's caused by the solid front axle. Had something that felt like a "death wobble" on my 04 JGC but it turned out to be a bent front driveshaft. Still haven't figured out how that happened (hadn't been offroad in about 5 years)

Exactly!!! Why the heck is the OPs 4runner shutting off after 10 minutes!?!?

By the way, The lack of the ASS system on 4runners made buying it a much happier experience. The concept of ASS on non-hybrids is idiotic and a false economy. It’s fake “green.”

That said, toyota seems to implement this in the least stupid way compared to jeeps or other brands. Regardless, nothing grates me more that seeing our Highlander pull into the garage, brake to a stop, have the engine shut off, then immediately start again when put in park, before being shut off again via the ignition.
