Do any of you folks make your own items or mods for your 4Runners?

Personally, I’ve only made some mounting brackets (to hang fans to assist in the cooling of my dogs in the cargo area,) and some ABS-piping storage tubes, but I’m curious to know what you’ve all made.

Could be sleeping platforms, roof-racks, storage solutions…

If I can quote MethodMan @brodeyo …I will lol
    Where are the pics haha

also the fan thing just happens to be on my immediate list with summer coming
Haven’t dove into researching actual fans yet cause I’m trying to wrap up this n that
But I’m hoping to find something that maybe I can mount flush, almost like a recessed vent that’s a fan

I do a decent amount of customisation.

Needed to level the back sleeping area so instead of huge drawers that would make it like a coffin i did a duel slide out table. Portions have aluminum for my MSR stove.

Wanted to mount my ROAM box so made my own custom aluminum mounts.

I did some custom power bank options as well.

Welded a pair TCM Recovery points to the frame, and cut the exhaust to greatly reduce the crushing it took on the trail. Looked like a snake when we were done cutting so...

Aux backup and brake lights and chase lights. Gotta get some 10 diode led lights. These 3 diode leds aren't bright enough.

    17120748433613388468624902811269.jpg

Cut 3 columns of molle panel to use the spaces between the molle and window. All of my recovery gear lives there.

    17120748778014905963402094774283.jpg

Homemade shelf to make the most use of the space. The board ALF is on keeps the totes from bashing into the rear glass.

Used a bit of conveyer belt to make covers for the gaping holes behind the rear tires after the bumper was installed. Keeps the winter slop out and works O.K. for mud, too. It's wedged in and fastened with a 2nd body mount bolt.

Yeah - it’s a pretty simple mount for a pair of fans. A piece of 1x2 with two smaller 1x2 bump-outs on the back, to work around a pleat in the pet barrier it’s mounted to.

First two pics show the cabin side of it, and the third pic shows how the fans sit, at a height they can blow into the cargo area (plus bonus shot of my dogs - RIP big guy on the right.)

Reply and pics posted somewhere in this thread. The pet barrier is from Bulletproof Fabrication, the molle panels from Rago Fabrication, but BPF makes ‘em as well.

That’s awesome! Kinda wish I had room for something like that, but the dog cage eats up the cargo area.

Nice! I like the table option. Do you still have access to the floor factory tie-down points, or does the platform mount to those? Would love to see the plans for it, if you’ve got ‘em. It seems like it could be a viable option for me, considering I can’t lose much space with the dog cage in the back.

Also - I wish I’d made mounts for my pelican cases; I drilled holes in the bottoms, and used rubber gaskets to ensure a seal, but the gaskets I’d used degraded over a couple of seasons and water began to seep in. Do you find any particular benefits to the mounting plates?

Nice work! I’ve been considering aux lights, but mounted under the lip of my roof-rack - I also plan on adding scene lights to the sides.

Smart choice with the molle panels. I always thought that amount of dead-space was unfortunate.

I’ve been considering upgrading my platform(which I love n made from my neighbors trash)
Wish I still had access to my lumberyard out west, could build anything there

I mean this with the utmost respect
But something bout that overhead pic…maybe the angle, with everything open, n the orange/red accents, I dunno lol but it screams like the coolest toy ever
You know like the cover or instructions for a transformer almost, it’s not hectic at all but something bout that pic
    Again I dunno

However, are the accents round the valance n spoiler light strips?

Yes i still have access to the tie-down points, but the platform also uses them to mount to. I did it out of a vision so no design plans. It was pretty simple though with plywood and ~2x2's.

The aluminum plate is great to have just the right spacing from the roof rack and mounting to the mounting points on the ROAM boxes. But the one negative is they do make some wind noise when driving without the box still.

I basically did it all with what i had around the house. Plywood, 2x2's and some extra aluminum.

Thanks! I wanted just enough to make it different without overdoing it. It is a good photo though.

I have a Red and Black pinstripe i put on the valance/spoiler and a set of Baja lights for backing down trails and incinerating tailgaters.

I have LED strips inside to light up the table area.

haha I thought you were taking it too far with this one!
You first see the fire pit n then look at your hatch
Straight outta GhostRider…looks like flames in your truck before zooming in lol

I’m almost done all my wiring/lighting stuff n one major guy is my rear lights…
would love something for better reverse lighting, rear scene lighting, chase light possibly for whatever reason, etc

I know they have direct replacement whether it’s bulbs or modifying our taillights functions

    flush mounts in the bumper

    using the tow harness?

Or just something on the back of my rack

probaly will end up with a combination of it all

but to stay on topic actually
I guess the most recent mod I did was reroute my windshield wiper filler stem with a random radiator hose VS $637241 for a new tank

    Great thread

Only thing I've diy'd is a galvanized mounting bracket for two, round, roof rack scene lights.
I also removed rear bumper, sanded n armour painted half it. Plus chopped OE exhaust and glued/clamped on an MBRP exhaust tip.

Forgot, I also modded my rear light mounts. Found 2 heavy duty magnet mounts which allows for more placement flexibility (50lb of magnetic hold):

I do a great deal of CAD modeling and am capable of cobbling up stuff from plastics to metal. So far I have a good five or six mods done with more in process as I type this. My best mod so far that I'm proud of (that I'm almost done with) is a unique air compressor mounting solution. All of my mods are being documented in my build thread.
