As long as no personal attacks and I agree some don't know the difference. Examples
"You are soo stupid!" vs "Your statement is soo stupid." There is a difference. One is attacking the person and the other attacking what person said.
In Washington when a congress critters says "my esteemed colleague from across the isle." is not expressing their like for the other, but expressing in code "that dumbazz over there". Again, not a direct personal attack.

True. But, dog pictures were brought up as a means to soften people up, which was sorta on topic. :D

Disagree, I like talking to everyone I can, I love to understand their thinking. I can't tell you how many things I have gone and researched after catching a debate going before it gets removed.

Yes, this is fun, but again, I disagree. If we don't talk about things, then others will never know why you think the way you do. And political conversations shouldn't be about changing someone's mind, but sharing thoughts and information to support why you feel that way.

What better place to see the misinformation. We then could provide "internet" support for the true or false info. I quoted internet, as we all know, if its on the net, its real, right?

    Agree.

And I don't want to go to a political forum to hear what all those folks who are deep into politics think, I want to know what folks like me are thinking.

This past weekend, we hung out with some friends and a BIG DEBATE on "White Privilege started" Heated is an understatement. In fact the conversation was hotter than the fire we were stand next to. After a few hours, it was time to go home (1 AM), we all shock hands and hugged. Even though we might have disagreed, we heard each other, didn't disown each other and are still committed to spending Tuesday evening traveling to and from a concert together.

The more we say we can't talk about politics, the more the politicians run us. Think about talking about Salary, that was a big NO NO. Well, all that did was allow companies to short change a gender or screw folks.

So, you have changed your political views based on what someone on the internet said? And, even if you have, you must know that you're the exception.

I never said people shouldn't discuss things. I like reading/hearing other views as well.

But, that's not what usually happens when people talk politics (and political issues) on internet forums. It's rarely a discussion, or even a debate. It usually just turns into bickering.

some for sure turn it into that, and yes I have. Most recently about my thoughts on the oil situation. I had to shift the blame away from one person, due to my misunderstanding of what they signed.

most forums that allow politics/religion eventually shut it down because it just becomes a mess of insults and threats that often move into the private messages out of site from the moderators. big difference between disagreeing with friends in person than some random joe-schmoe on the internet.

some people are just too passionate about the 2 and simply cannot control themselves.

Or…Since the title of this thread is “Disappointment,” could it be that finding anything other than disappointment here is then a violation of that rule? If you expected to see posts about Toyotas, you are disappointed, find pictures of dogs, disappointed, therefore I submit that due to the title of this thread in particular, that anything that fails to meet the expectations of the reader is indeed “on-topic.”
I also submit for thought, that the problem herein is not the big jerks who want strict adherence to the rules, nor the asshole that posts a picture of his cat locking out a steamer on the head gasket thread. The problem lies within the rule itself. If there was no rule about staying on topic, who would care what people posted in this or that thread? Realistically, I understand the purpose of rules, but in the grand scheme of things…does it really flogging matter?

I bet I can get you to at least question your political affiliation or at least give you a new perspective that will make you think hard about it in just a few minutes. Regardless which “side” you are on. Hehe I will make that bet with anyone.

I just thought that there should be the ability to talk about items that revolved around vehicles and fuel such as 'SAFE vehicles' and other rules/laws/regs.

But!... that does involve political discussion of the reasoning especially since the recent roll-back (Dec). And not allowed... Talking about high gas prices without knowing/discussing root causes is unproductive.

There are plenty of forums where people discuss politics. Some of them get very personal. I am in a weather forum that believe it or not has a political section and there are lots of name calling on that one. I was shocked at first but realize that it is all in good fun unless you cross the line and threaten another member. I like that this place is politics free and should stay that way.

But the recent gas price threads were discussing the root causes without knowing them. Just a bunch of misinformation and misguided outrage. That's even less productive than ignoring the topic.

I mostly agree that the vehicle discussion sections should be free of politics (although the two have become so intertwined that this is becoming almost impossible), but maybe a separate section, similar to off topic but with looser rules wouldn't affect the rest of the sections. It might actually help keep politics from leaking into car related threads the way they have been.

Neither do I these days but do lean in the Libertarian/Hands off/Less government intrusion direction especially when comes to the American car culture.

Not true, the information is public domain available to everyone. Here is a link and no outrage I can see on this site.

The decisions made by politicians affect your life, so saying "I'm not really political" really means you don't understand the impact that they have
What point are you trying to make about misplaced outrage?

I get that and it's a hard job to moderate a forum involving certain subjects unless it's very narrowly defined. Gas prices a/k/a Energy Policy is not so easily narrowed since it's global in nature, however edicts from the federal government defining how our vehicles are built is. Chasing down the committees, sub-committees, lobbyists, money given to politicians ect is all public record if you dig hard enough.

After all it's our money in the form of taxes that is being used to determine what a manufacturer can build or can not build.

Simply people being mad about things causing high gas prices when those things don't cause high gas prices, for example. Rather than citing credible sources as was suggested above.

You can talk about what people would and could do all day long. I'm simply pointing out what I've actually seen here when these discussions were ongoing.
