My point was that the maintenance log doesn't actually specify a 30K interval, except under special operating conditions.

You've made it perfectly clear that you believe those who don't ever drive on dirt are perfectly fine driving 100,000's of miles without changing fluids. Thanks for your input.

Well, that's completely inaccurate, but OK.

Does a transfer case have synchros like a manual transmission?

Honestly, the way I read the maintenance log, you should be checking your fluid at 30k intervals and make a determination on whether to change the fluids based on that assessment.

This all comes down to what conditions you actually drive your vehicle in. And based on those conditions how comfortable are you with letting it go longer between changes, how strapped for cash are you, how comfortable are you at performing the maintenance, etc.

The typical driver (or mall crawler as it's often referred to) doesn't need to change their fluids every 30k. They could get away with every 60k or maybe even longer if they're just cruising the highway.

If you're rig is loaded up with a front and rear bumper, winch, lightbar, recovery gear, etc. Or you are very demanding of your vehicle using it in rough terrain and constantly utilizing the 4wd, or you tow or have work equipment that is loading down the vehicle. Then I would say a 30k interval makes sense for you.

Don't gaslight and mock others because they don't fit in the same fluid change interval category as you. We all use our vehicles very differently.

Personally I load up with camping gear a couple times a year, lug around kids and sports gear throughout the week and occasionally tow 1k trailer for work. I'd say my use is moderate. And will probably change my fluids every 45k give or take.

To my understanding, yes it does. If you watch the video here he explains why you should use a GL-4 fluid.

Did you watch the video? He literally said the Toyota TC fluid is GL5 and that you can use 75w-90 gl5 in the diffs AND transfer case.

Are people still scared of not using Toyota fluid even though Toyota doesn’t make fluids? Might be time to change that PCV valve that’s trendy in the FB groups.

My bad, I must have been thinking of a different video. I shall rewatch and also find the reference to where you should use GL-4.

I did rewatch the video, it certainly explains the reasoning behind using the GL-4 in a manual transmission. I might be mixing up my sources but I swear I remember there being talk of the 4runner transfer case needing GL-4 as well.

Here is a good article on the fluid replacements. It does reference the 75W fluids recommended for the transfer case. But doesn't specifically mention GL-4.

Yup, I would never use GL5 in the TC.

My experience with this truck purchased about 3 months ago and driven during -35C weather before changing driveline fluids was that the transfer case had a loud clunk noise when shifting from 4x4 back to 4x2 which I didn't like so looked around for correct fluid. After changing whatever fluid was in transfer case from previous owner to Red Line MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 gear oil the clunk went away and now shifts from 4x to 2x without noise at any temperature. Guessing that most 75W90 gear oil works fine in these truck x-case in warm weather but maybe not so much in extreme cold, I'll continue using Red Line MT-LV.

Ours has the loud clunk, I'm 99 % sure it's factory fluids because it was a previous rental. Redline does look like the best transfer case choice out there to me.

I think @mainerunr was correct. You clearly have trouble with reading comprehension. Or, you're just trolling because you have nothing better to do.

Just because I pointed out that the maintenance log doesn't actually require a 30K fluid change, doesn't mean that I don't think fluids need to be changed. I don't know why I keep trying to explain it to you, though, as you're obviously not getting it.

    Have a super day!

Is Redline available in a 75W? Or, are you using a different viscosity? I'll be doing mine again this spring.

Edit: found it. I think this is what is going on mine next.
