I finally ran a Car Fax on my 2001 4Runner ( SOS ..... help ) The Car Fax indicated the last recorded mileage when sold at the Florida Auction was : 367K !!!! A local Dealer picked it up sold it to me last month, however, the odometer reading indicated 178K when i bought the SUV ...... somebody either turned back the clock or replaced the cluster !!!!!! Does anyone have an idea how this could be done , or where this should go for justice, or did I just get the .....Royal Scam !!!!! Please respond, especially if you experienced this type of Scam ... Thanks !!!!!!

Dang bro! So sorry to hear this...

Sounds like someone replaced the cluster from a junkyard or the like.

The other day I saw a You Tube were a journalist was indicating that 70% of used car sold in the US their millage were modified.

The problem is so acute that we should a post that would discuss these issues and ways to protect the buyers.

Back in the late 90s it was very easy to replace clusters.

Enter early 2000s and I know for Honda of America as a dealer we had to use the Scan-Tool to enter beginning mileage to match the unit we were replacing. Didn't happen often though.

I remember when Lexus started linking all of their dealerships and you could call any Lexus dealer and get service records from a vehicle that was serviced at another lexus dealership all the way across the country, that made the illegal activity of odometer fraud a lot harder to get away with.
