I have gone through the owners manual several times and for some reason my Contact photos on my radio screen disappear whenever I go 5 mph or over when I am at 0 mph or parked they come back. Does anybody know how to fix this on a 2023 4Runner? Yes, I have gone through and un synced and re-synced my iPhone. I have also reset my iPhone I’m not sure what else to do help!

Contact pictures showing when parked (attached).

It’s a nanny state feature that all new Toyotas have now, to keep you from getting distracted. My friend’s 2007 Camry Hybrid wouldn’t let you punch an address into the GPS, even with a passenger in the shotgun seat, unless the car was going under 5 MPH or totally stopped. A lot of Toyotas didn’t get it until like MY2020, but the high-end Camrys have had it since 2007 and all Camrys have had it for close to a decade (same with the Corolla).

This is one of many reasons I love driving a 2010 Tacoma with an aftermarket touch screen HU! I would get Camrys and Corollas as loaners all the time when my truck was getting work done at the dealer. I bitched about into the front desk and they said it was a good feature; I highly doubt a dealer would disable this feature, but I’m sure there is something obnoxiously simple you can do to disable it, like simply pulling a wire.

On most (all?) aftermarket car audio/visual stereo systems, there is a wire that goes from the stereo to the transmission to check if you are driving or not which then will not let the car stereo play videos (and apparently pictures as well) if you are driving. Your factory car stereo probably has something similar.

On aftermarket stereos you can just run that wire (light blue or light green, if I remember correctly) from the stereo to ground to over-ride this "safety" feature. I strongly suggest you do NOT even consider doing this on your factory stereo, unless you are a car stereo installation professional and are ready to take full responsibility if something goes wrong, like, for example, your vehicle exploding and burning to the ground.

I’ve read somewhere that it’s been done with the stock infotainment system.

Probably a Toyota safety system. They don't want you to be adjusting the radio while you are driving. It wants you using your steering controls. I would expect more crazy things with more technology.

That is what I figured. I tried to look for a workaround and even networked with the service manager at the Toyota dealership who was also clueless as to this happening. ‍♀️

It's normal behavior and I am unaware of a practical workaround. This might be one of those things that's best to just leave alone.

I do find it odd that Toyota allows cover art for albums to be displayed but not a picture of a contact.

With all the new tech, it would be nice if you could adjust your speedometer through the information system for larger tires or a different gear ratio. I don't know, they may have it now. I see GMC has something like that.

Right? That is why I found it odd that my contact photos disappeared when my cover art did not!

The only benefit I see to this is using the search feature in GPS while I’m driving. It would be nice to search while I’m driving, which is usually when I need to search. I hate that I have to pull over (and I always use the mic option - I talk, I don’t type).

Not being able to see the cover art on my music is a non-issue for me.

    I don’t know if I’d spend $175 to fix a problem that isn’t really a problem.

Yeah, at that rate you may as well spend $300 or $400 on a Hamilton Auto or whatever similar adapter that changes your older style infotainment display to Android Auto and Carplay, and just run AA / CP and you'll have your contacts on there.

You can use voice commands to enter an address? That’s epic.

I miss being able to scroll through my saved phone numbers while driving too.

I really have to get acquainted with voice commands.

On a slightly unrelated topic, I have an irrational fear of taking apart the dash. It’s a vestigial fear from the old days, when it was really hard to get into the dash of most cars without causing damage. There are three things I may want to install that require pulling the dash apart.

The Naviks Motion Lockout Bypass Harness, discussed above.
The AutoHarnessHouse DCM Bypass Kit, and
The Labops Gear lower dash mount. A sturdy 1 inch RAM mount ball that replaces the Air Bag light below the temperature knob.

Maybe I’ll assemble all three and take the plunge.

Yeah, when doing a search for an address press the mic button (but you have to be in park or fully stopped!) Then say the address: 1234 Main Street, Dallas, Texas. And it will find it or others like it. Then select it and Bobs your Uncle, you’re off!

Put your dongle away. This is a family themed website.

Wait … you have to be stopped for the system to accept voice commands?!

For GPS, yes. I have tried searching for an address while driving and it tells me the function is unavailable, but only if I press the mic button. If I type it out manually it works.

I don’t want to text while driving that’s dangerous.
