I have a 2019 Tacoma OR and the entune head unit has been garbage. They gave me a 4Runner rental while it was in the shop and I immediately noticed how uncomfortable my truck was. I really like the Tacoma, but I bought it because I didn’t want to be in the shop getting it fixed all the time (the loaner car guy knows me by name from recalls and entune). I’m considering a 4Runner, but entune has me gun-shy. I know they changed it in 2020 to include android auto and carplay. I have an iPhone XR and that seems to be the root cause of my Tacoma entune issues. Has anybody had issues in the 2020+ 4Runner with an iPhone XR (iOS 14.3)?

Welcome from Wisconsin! We have a 2020, and were told there is a 'glitch' in Entune program, going to give them(Toyota) some time, and if they can't get it straightened out, aftermarket here I come. BTW, this 'glitch' is with the use of an Android phone. It's hard to explain to Alexa why we haven't taken her for a ride in the 4Runner for a while.

With the exception of entune, mine was a similar story. Had my Taco in for service, got to drive a 4Runner while waiting; I ended up leaving with the 4Runner. Felt way more comfortable (for me); engine didn’t have all the crazy ticking sounds (I know the sounds are normal and expected, just saying I appreciated not hearing them all, lol); cargo room without having to worry about things getting wet in the bed; a headliner patches would actually stick to; a normal transmission that didn’t guess at gears; etc... although entune still sucked, and I too ended up replacing it with aftermarket. Mines a 19 though, didn’t have the newer unit with CarPlay.

Fwiw, I did love my taco though; and I do miss it. But no regrets switching. 4Runners likely to be a “until the wheels fall off” vehicle.

The Tacoma seems to be uncomfortable for taller individuals.

I’m a 2019 Tacoma defector also, bought a 2021 in December. I got tired of the 3.5, and love the 4.0.

Had a 2020 Tacoma ORP, sold it and bought another 4Runner. Carplay in our 2021 works perfect and I have no issues at all with the entertainment system.

2020 here. Android has always worked flawless for me. iPhone works better now. It was an IOS issue a few months ago, but once the phone software updated the Carplay seems to work as intended. I have used both for 3+ hour road trips and have not had any issue.
