I've done all kinds of camping.
I like to sleep in the pop up camper. It's pretty nice in there.
Sometime I sleep in the back of the 4runner if I'm out on a fishing or hunting weekend in the north woods of NH and ME. Sometimes in a big tent sometimes in a backpacking tent.
I like all of the options really for different occasions. 20250623_113710.jpg FB_IMG_1728916554904.jpg 20230818_074121.jpg

Enjoyed camping in VT with my son. Was not expecting it be cold at night, glad I was prepared for all weather.

My camp is very simple. On this occasion, we parked our vehicles very close to the tents to act as a wind break.

C6 Outdoors has a nice setup. 25lb rooftop that can be stored on a wall in the garage. Pricey for sure. Very comfortable.
Those bam beds work well for inside sleeping too.

Where did you find the fishing pole rack?

It's a Rodsaver rack modified with aluminum flat stock. I had the same one in previous 4Runners but it would sag way down in the middle. So, I use the aluminum to keep it tight to the ceiling.

    Here's the rack:

    https://www.basspro.com/p/rod-saver-vehicle-rod-carrier

I wrapped it around the aluminum flat stock and pinched it in place with another piece of aluminum. The rear piece got bolted in where the factory hooks had been. The other section is held between the hooks on the rear passenger overhead grab handles with tension. I notched the ends of the aluminum to hold the hooks more securely. It was a bit of trial and error.

Tents are OZTent RV5 (tagalong tent) that gets attached to the Rhino Rack batwing awning.

This tent worked out SO good for me. I really enjoyed keeping the trunk open for that extra leg space while sleeping in the truck. Slept like a baby in the 38 degree weather in my sleeping bag.

We camped through Canada in the back with a Luno air mattress. It was awesome. Easy setup, easy to move. My wife got us the window screens this last November because it did get a little toasty when we couldn’t have the windows down. (Mosquitos) She also got us the rear window screen. Can’t wait for our next road trip.

Good to hear cause we were up in Kamloops and it was really hot at night. I thought my wife was going to murder me. Thankfully we were in a Costco parking lot so there weren’t any mosquitos.

Are you able to screen off the section by the lift gate?

I slept in the back of my Tacoma Trucks for over 20 years, 03 Tacoma Pre-Runner, 06 Tacoma V6 quad cab Pre-Runner. I've now been camping almost most 6 years in luxury with a 2016 Minnie Winnie 22R Class C motorhome.
I'm thinking of going to a lightweight travel trailer that my 4Runner should be able to pull (No, I am not dreaming or deluding myself) Check out Travelliterv.com
I have experience pulling a small travel trailer with my 06 Tacoma V6 automatic tranny. At 2,700lbs. dry weight once loaded up with myself, wife, a 100lb German Shepherd and equipment..it just could not perform

No, that’s just a screen room that I attach the rain fly to the lift gate, great for rainy days.

Anyone camp in their 2nd gen with a roof top tent? If you do, I'd be interested in seeing your setup (what kind of roof rack & tent).

For cold weather camping I add layers of a closed cell backpacker pad, a self inflating pad, a layer of Home depot mylar flexible insulation on my cot. And of course a quality bag. Toasty at 7 degrees at 7,000 feet one Fall trip in Sierras.

Tribe Basecamp. 2022 model. I've seen a few for sale here and there, this one just happened to be 15 minutes down the road. That said, I just saw one recently listed in the Phoenix area and another in the Colorado Springs area.
