And in the right conditions, those Willys never really rot away. I have family in Puerto Rico that have used the same Willy’s for over 40 years. Only in the last decade was it “restored” with a a decent spray can job and marine vinyl on the seats (granted, after good prep work). It’s now a sunday driver, but I remember vividly riding on the hood of that thing.

I used to see them packed down with a whole family and a metric ton of bananas on the hood, back and over the sides headed for market.

Shit, I used to hear cautionary tales of Willy crashing and killing 10 people at once (one vehicle accidents). Funny not funny if you know what I mean. Probably meant to keep kids from accepting rides on their friends dad’ Willys lol

Anyone talking about "needs" doesn't understand the point of the Raptor. It's not at all about what anyone needs. Kinda like a Hellcat. Of course nobody needs that. And it's not designed for everyone. I think it's badass, even though no part of me plans to buy one.

Besides my Toyota’s I have picked up a couple jeeps over the summer , I bought a 2021 Jeep Wrangler JLU 4 door Rubicon Diesel , got a awesome deal just before the shortages kicked in , I had to give up one of my Tacoma’s , just had way to many vehicles , gave up a 2015 Tacoma 4cyl , I still had a 2012 4.0 TRD off-road .
The Jeep is pretty amazing in a lot of ways , you can put True 35” tires right on with no lift , 37’s with 2” lift . No need for any special TPMS programming self learning to 413MHZ any sensor , with the diesel its 3rd gen 3.0 , transmission is pretty awesome , shifts and feels better than my 2020 LC200 . The torque is awesome .
Not all vehicles are created equal … The Jeep is just different , I think the 4runner is built more solid and has better rust corrosion … jeeps still rust .
My buddy have a new badlands bronco … the Aluminum UCA and LCA are a big problem , its a cool looking truck , I never buy the first year of anything .
I don’t think Ford is going to steal the Jeep market , since the LC 200 has come to a close , I love my Land cruiser at this time in my life , I’m 50 and its my over built creature comfort dependable SUV . From a 25yr old person LC 200 was a over priced old man SUV .
I think the LC 200 guys are going to migrate over to the bronco , I allready see guys with LC 200 have also purchased jeeps , you can do more with less money with those machines .
I think were in uncharted over priced market , time will tell if the pricing will come down or at the very least stabilized , everything is just too expensive .

Ford: let’s completely re-engineer the truck, give it new body panels, a radical suspension and gigantic engine and completely overhaul the interior.

Toyota: let’s install an off the shelf suspension and some stickers.

I KNEW there'd be at least one Supra/MR2 nerd on this forum.

    1. I inherited the first and second gen Supras.
    3. 3rd gen was completely boring. It might have had the greatest engine on the planet, but it was about as sexy as a Corolla.
    4. I owned the 4th gen Supra.
    5. Supercharged 1st gen MR2 was mildly faster than my ancient Alfa Romeo. MR2's were consistently stolen (friend had 2 stolen in different parts of the country!).
    6. A GF had the 2nd Gen MR2 and mod'd it. Very cool woman, and a fun car.
    7. 3rd gen was weird and back to being boring.

So, yeah, I've driven almost all of those cars.

    Have you?

Have you driven all the 4Rs? I have.

Marketing and Product Development are two separate divisions that often have completely different agendas.

Marketing a product as an off-road vehicle is like putting stripes on a 4 door sedan and calling it a sports car. Not hard, but not the same as actually building a vehicle with intention.

The 4runner is fine the way it is, but Toyota is doing the bare minimum and making enough money that they can get away with it.

Careful. Telling everyone that you’ve driven all the vehicles in a particular discussion can alienate you from everyone, even if it’s true.

    I owned a 1st gen MR2 and 2nd gen Supra. I've driven a supercharged MR2, 2nd gen MR2, 3rd gen turbo Supra, and 4th gen turbo Supra.

The fact that you said the 3rd gen may have had the greatest engine on the planet really makes me wonder if you're full of it. :boink:

I owned 2nd, 4th and 5th gens. Always had 4wd, dual range transfer case, decent suspension and ground clearance. What else do you want in a 4×4?

Of course it's due for an update, but that doesn't make it a lousy 4×4.

There's only a handful of vehicles produced that have real off-road advantages over the 4runner.

No, I was making a point, that no matter what you think of the 3rd gen, it was a dull dull dull car. So, it was hyperbole to make a point. Next up in English grammar class...

Well, that's usually true of people that are insecure. I've spent my whole life around cars and other people with cars, so, I've had an opportunity to drive a lot of vehicles. Not all of them, but in this case, yeah, almost all of the cars I mentioned. And, I was asked a direct question, so, there you have it.

    Well, 66 wouldn't be DOT approved. :D

But, Mickey Thompson has DOT 58's. Kinda weak, but still decent sized for mall crawlers.

"Dear Toyota, please bring back the tried and true FJ-40, FJ-45 Wagon and FJ-45 pickup."

I'll buy one of each, thank you.

    Edit.

Also, sometimes I had more fun in my FJ-40 with 30" tires than I do with my TJ on 35's or 37's.

I got to use my 4Runner to pull my buddy's jeep off a log the other weekend. This was next to the swimming hole, so he caught lots of flack from the crowd  My wife got the new 4 door Big Bend, and I've got a 2 door Base on order. There will be ALOT of broken Bronco parts in my future, judging by what I see under the wife's rig. If I can get my 2 door to look like the Saleen version :curls:

Ok ok, im not a Ford guy, and I'm gonna drive my 4r into the ground

But if I had a bronco it'd look 100% like this

Agree! That looks fantastic. Ever since I saw the first video of that green color, I've been in love with it. The white grill and white wheels for that retro theme looks perfect.

I think the Raptor is ridiculous but cool in a fun way, I think if I were to buy one I would buy the more basic version that comes with the 32-in tires and the rear locker.
