Btw, I'll be running the Rubicon in a bone stock '18 Ltd., will I need sliders or a tow hook? :tinfoilhat:

The purpose of these forums usually allows for less experienced folks to join in and learn. So, what if someone asked what oil they should use? If you want a forum "only for those who already know everything about 4Runners and the history of the forum," you should launch one.

I think it's unfortunate that people sometimes pile on new members for asking "popular" questions in a new thread instead of searching.

For a lot of new members, it might be their first attempt at joining/navigating an online forum, they have no idea how deep the archive of knowledge goes, and most are simply here for some info/help and a sense of community.

If your first impulse upon seeing a thread isn't to simply offer some help or offer guidance in a kind manner, then exit the thread. The forum success depends on each one of us in a small way.

Not a one size fits all thing but this has been a pretty good guide that people have used for the 5th gen. YMMY.

I just installed factory TRD Pro rims on my SR5 with new Cooper AT3 275/70/17's and everything is fine going forward but they're rubbing when I'm turning in reverse, so not that big a deal but kind of a PITA to have a limited turn radius when backing up. Hoping to find out if a 1" leveling kit will resolve?? Any input appreciated. Thanks.

I've heard of guys using a heat gun to re-shape the mud-flaps for slight rubbing.

I'm having a similar issue with stock size tires due to a slight negative offset on my wheels. I keep meaning to try the heat gun method, but have been keeping busy with other projects. I'll report back if I finally get it done and if it helps

I was hesitant to ask these questions for fear of some people's answers, but no guts no glory right? So here goes:
    1. If I put wider tires on my 4runner do I need to shorten my rear end?
    2. If I re-gear for bigger tires, Do I need to put a ring on it?
    3. Should I be using 2-stroke or 4-stroke oil?
    4. Should it be synthetic or dino?
    5. What viscosity blinker fluid should I be using?
    6. Should it be synthetic or dino?
    7. Do I have to use duck tape? Or will any animal's tape work?

    Why not? Everyone else has.
    1. Yes. And tub the wheelwells.
    2. No. Just hit it n quit it.
    3. Definitely 2-stroke. I recommend Bel-Ray.
    4. Dino. They won't mind.
    5. 15W250
    6. Synthetic. Duh.
    7. Any animal will work. I highly recommend Gorilla tape. Just be careful when you yank it off him.

Looking for advice/opinions on my scenario. I have a 16 Limited all stock at this point. I am looking to change the wheel/tire package and get rid of the 20" rims and put 17"s on it with either Nitto's or BFG's. I also just plan to put a leveling kit to make it look level. I am reading some say the 275/285 would rub w/o a lift. Not looking to lift at this time. Would love to run a bigger tire b/c i like the look.

I haven't decided on what type of rim but will be matte black/black. So what have others done/suggestions for the wheel/tire package. If you have pics of your rig pls post/send to me. Would love to see that.

If there are other factors pls advise.

Thanks for your comments and feedback.

So what did you end up having to do? I am literally having 275/70/17 BFG KO2's put on TRD PRO RIMS as I type this as earlier in this exact thread it says that the 275/70/17 is the biggest you can go without a lift and will not rub SR5 and TRD Pro Rims have the same backspace of 4.5" the only difference is that the offset on the stock SR5 wheel is 15mm and on the TRD Pro is 4mm which is less than 1/2 inch. I am concerned now that it is going to rub which is why I am wondering what you did to remedy your situation as I dont really have the loot to invest in a lift since its my ol ladies daily driver but she's been asking for the wheels since we bought it new in 2016. I guess I shouldve just sucked it up then and bought the TRD Pro that was on the lot :/

I wouldn't stress about it. Most likely you won't rub with that tire size.

If you do end up rubbing though, identify the spot where it rubs. Most likely it will be the mudflap or the front fender flare. If it's the mudflap, you can either remove the mudflap, bend the plastic of the mudflap with a heat gun, or push the wheel forward with an alignment.

If you opt to push the wheel forward with an alignment (which is what I did......I'm running 285's BTW), then you'll want to instruct the person doing the alignment that you want the caster on your truck to be in the 3.5 - 4 degree range. You shouldn't rub on the mudflap anymore. However, after pushing your caster forward, you might rub on the front fender flare. To fix this all you have to do is something called the fender liner mod. Look that up as there are different tutorials on how to do it. It's really simple and will take 10 minutes or so. Then you'll be all set.

First of all Thank You for helping out, Secondly this is actually bittersweet. Why? Well yesterday I was volunteering at a conference at our church and my wife was attending (it was for women) and on the way to the conference she had 3 other ladies in the car and she was rear ended. Therefore this morning I picked up the wheels and was not sure whether I was going to even put them on. I gave in and put them on and can happily say that I tried everything I could to make them rub and they didnt.

Good News - TRD Pro Rims with 275/70/17's will fit on a Stock SR5 without requiring a lift.

Same situation for me. I have a 2016 Limited and was curious about other Limited owners' set-ups and which tyres fit without a lift (or even a leveling kit).

Agreed. I’m interested in moving up to 275/70/17s when I need to replace my tires.

Yes, 275's should fit without any issues. Right now, my 4runner has a 3" lift so I'm planning to wrap my 17" boyd coddington wheels with some 285/70's.
