what position should my awd control switch be in when not off road? my runner sounds and feels like I'm off road when I'm on city streets and it doesn't seem to be shifting right.

V6 should be in 2WD. The v8 should be in 4hi

New to the forum, but a 4runner could be in my future. Quick question, is the V8 full-time 4wd and the V6 part-time?

yep. V8 runs a center diff and is effectively AWD until you lock it.
