I can't seem to find the thread... But it's not as easy as the Tacoma mod. It's quite involved, if I remember correctly.

There is a write up, if not here then one of the other 4runner forums. It is not simple like the old tacoma method, when i saw the pain in the ass it would be i decided not to do it.

I wanted to do it too but after reading the write-up... nope.

In my opinion, the best (and easiest?) route is to wire them separately to a new switch.

For those that might be interested in crash's ultimate headlight mod (I think that was the one with a beefed up wiring harness wired directly to the battery)... the fogs could maybe piggy-back on that battery connection?

Don't mean to change the topic here... I also would like to see the anytime fog write up again if someone finds it.

The "antman" link above is the one I see most often referenced. Thanks to the guy that posted that.

Why couldn't u get 2 factory plugs from the fog lights and wire to a relay then to a switch? Leave factory wiring alone as not to void the warranty?

That looks easy to do. Everything is inside and under the dash. Hell the power folding mirrors were harder than this. And I'm getting ready to add the power rear door with foot sensor myself.

It’s a pretty easy job, basically the fog light relay is inside the body control module, so you bypass it and add a relay. Control side of the relay goes through factory switch, then you fuse power with an add a circuit to the load side of the relay spliced into the factory wire that powers the fogs. You need to add 4 short wires to go the relay. The wiring diagram is pretty easy to follow and nothing you’ll need to splice into is hard to access.

Here's a video on YouTube that shows their Brite Box Fogster product, how its installed, and how it works on a Tacoma, but its the same for 4Runner.

With this installed, are you able to turn off the fogs when running low beams?

I agree. That's what makes the Brite Box Anytime so appealing

Yeah, it doesn't affect normal low beam operation and the stock function of your fog light switch when using low beams. The Fogster will turn fogs on automatically when you turn on high beams no matter what position your fog light switch is in.

Genuinely curious- is it legal to run highs + fogs on the hiway? ie. Is it just like running high beams with an aux driving light?

I watched the BriteBox video but the one thing that I did not see that I would have liked to see is the ability to run the fog lights WITHOUT the headlamps on. Does anyone know if this device has this capability?

There is two models available for 4 Runners. The Fogster and Anytime. The one shown in the video is the Fogster that turns them on automatically with high beams. You are looking for the Brite Box Anytime. That will do exactly what you are looking for and be able to turn on and off your fogs without the headlamps on.

Right, not logical. But there are tons of lighting laws that don’t seem logical. Running fog lights alone, for example. And certain lights have to be certain hights off the ground. Look up your states codified laws for vehicle lighting. The list is endless.

Maybe it’s just fine to run fogs with highs. It probably is. I just don’t wanna get pulled over for doing so. But when running fogs with highs, I think the fogs would be “running lights” by definition. And I believe true running lights have to be a certain height. I could be wrong. Probably am.

I just wanna know the correct answer.

I've had so many trucks etc cant remember what manufacturer but they let you run fogs with the parking lights. works great in heavy fog and the headlights make it miserable to drive

    I don’t disagree with you.

(FYI when I was talking about heights in my previous post, I actually meant height on the vehicle, not beam pattern)

I will attempt to shed some light on the forward facing lighting regulations as I understand them, and this is from an experience I had about give five years ago when comparing two vehicles I owned, essentially the same lighting package but one year apart in build dates.

They were a Volkswagen Golf TDI and a Volkswagen GTI, 2015 and 2016 both built in Mexico. Both cars had Xenon headlights and LED fog lights. The low beam/high beam was one bulb in each housing that was changed between low and high by activating a shutter that covered a portion of the bulb. I noticed on the 2015 when high beams were on, it would not deactivate that fogs if they were selected on. On the 2016, same lighting scenario, it would shut the fogs off.

In doing some research it had to do with number of forward facing bulbs that projected a certain amount of light. The max number was four. So lows beams and fogs...ok. The assumption was always the high beam bulb was a separate bulb so low/high/fog would be six bulbs....not ok. In the VWs because of the specific lighting package it was still only 4 total bulbs with low/high/fogs so in essence not breaking any DOT laws.

Now somewhere along the line it was changed in production and the computer was coded to shut the fogs off with high beams, it was easy enough to go into the ECU with a VagCom and make changes but I suspect that with multiple headlight options that included standard halogens, it was easier to just make every car the same in the headlight operation, even if they were only using 4 bulbs total in some vehicles.

Now things could have changed in the past five years because headlight tech is changing but that is how I understand it.

US motor vehicle lighting regulations are way behind the times. Remember how long it took to get away from sealed-beam headlights? Lots of people were running “illegal” European H4 bulbs and housings for years until the US finally allowed them around 1983.

The number of forward lights is another issue. As is adaptive driving beam (ADB) headlights like in Europe.

Here’s a section of the California Vehicle Code pertaining to the number of forward facing lights a vehicle can have lighted at one time. (Four).

If you have high beams, low beams, and fogs lighted, that’s six. A violation. I suspect other states have similar regulations.

    “2010 California Code Vehicle Code
Article 2. Headlamps And Auxiliary Lamps
    VEHICLE CODE
    SECTION 24400-24411

24405. (a) Not more than four lamps of the following types showing to the front of a vehicle may be lighted at any one time:
    (1) Headlamps.
    (2) Auxiliary driving or passing lamps.
    (3) Fog lamps.
    (4) Warning lamps.
    (5) Spot lamps.
    (6) Gaseous discharge lamps specified in Section 25258.
    (b) For the purpose of this section each pair of a dual headlamp system shall be considered as one lamp.
    (c) Subdivision (a) does not apply to any authorized emergency vehicle.”

Hey Kevin, I’m fixing my issue. Lol. I’m adding bajadesigns amber fogs in my Pro since there illegal. They will go well with my Bajadesigns led light bar. What do you think. I agree with you the way there set up.
