Looking at possibly picking up an ATV this year for hunting and camping and was wondering if anyone has experiences with them long term? I have ridden Honda and Can Am before but no long term ownership experience.

Currently considering Honda Rincon and Can Am Outlander MAX XT-P.

I know the Can Am is significantly faster and more powerful but wondering how reliable it is, as well as offroad capabilities of both?

The Can Am looks like it has a lot of aftermarket support and may be fun to mod too. Not sure if the Honda has much aftermarket support.

I bought a can an 850 north edition new in 2018 and have had zero issues with it except a winch contactor. $35 bucks and a half hour to swap it out. The only reason I went can am is because the wife wanted the back seat to go with me occasionally. That backseat is awesome for the driver as well as the passenger. I don’t know she’s back there and it’s Goldwing comfortable. If the wife had no input or interest in riding occasionally and it was just for me I was buying the Honda Rincon. They are both great machines and I’ve had BRP products since 1994 Seadoo GTX with no issues ever and I’ve had 3 jetskis plus their 180 challenger jet boat.

2011 Polaris Sportsman 500HO Carb. Been very reliable for trail Riding/Snowplowing/Hauling fire wood. Blows my buddies 2022 Honda Rubicon 500 EFI away
. If/when I upgrade going W/Sportsman 570. They say it is better then the 850 & <$$$.Can Am's are very nice, BUT way more then I would spend on an ATV. You can up grade the rear seat for <$$ then you'd put out for the Can Am too.

Thanks! that is exactly what I was looking for. I would want it to be reliable and comfortable for 2 people as well as be able to carry gear/an animal. I was thinking the 850 would be great for utility as well as fun when just taking it out camping.

The rincon would be very reliable but not as fun and would be more difficult to fit 2 people.

Do you think the polaris and can am are comparable? like outlander 570 vs sportsman 570?

If you need to get a 2 seater like myself I would recommend getting the Can Am. I store it outside in the weather. It’s been 6 plus years and if I wash it still looks new. Seat material still new, plastics, rubber etc. I ride it hard on occasion and it’s been an awesome machine for me. It was a little more expensive than the Polaris when I bought it but not enough to make me switch from BRP products which I’ve had great luck with. Never had a problem with any of my BRP products that I wasn’t responsible for and this can am is my 5th BRP product since 1994.

Thanks for the pic/info!! yea I definitely need the capability of 2 seats for the wife or kid(once they get older). It will mostly be used for hunting but also for fun on camping trips. What do you tow it on? trying to find the most compact towing solution possible as I am limited on storage space.

1000000032 Large.jpg Hey OP, this will likely get responses like any other question regarding brands. People tend to recommend what they own.

Here's my opinion based on owning multiple quads and having many friends and family that have quads. For what it seems like what you're looking for, I think your best choice is either a Polaris Sportsman or a Can-Am. Both are available in a 2-up version. Both have similar reliability and both have a great deal of aftermarket support.

I suggest you take a test ride or rent each and see what you like better. I went with the Polaris Sportsman that myself and most give ride comfort and ease of use the edge over the Can-am.

Both are great machines and will serve you well but you should consider two main things. Test them and see what feels better and maybe dealer network/popularity in your area. My latest (I've had a Sportsman the last 3 years) has never need to go back to the dealer for anything and it gets ridden hard regularly. I don't even know how many hours are on mine now as I ride it almost every day on my 40 acres. I also take it up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan regularly.

I'm sure Like the OP said BRP are great products! My Sportsman was made in the Minnesota plant (not sure if they still are?) The 1 advantage my buddies Honda has over mine is engine braking because he has 6 sp auto shift. Hond, Polaris, CanAm can't go wrong W/any of those 3, It will depend on what you want.

I had a Yamaha Warrior 350 6 spd rear wheel drive. was doing hill climb in Minersville,Pa got 7/8 to top, rear wheels started spinning, grabbed clutch & frt brakes. Then it started sliding, I remember seeing rocks flying out from frt wheels as I stood over to keep it from flipping. Next thing it was black/quiet, remember think you're dead you're F'n dead, THEN the pain train came felt like someone split my chest back hurt laying twisted & claustrophobic in my helmet(never was that from crawling in helicopter tailbooms & other tight areas & in Gulfstream we operated.) 1st thing I did was try to wiggle my toes & could, Got taken out on JD Gator. The ride on that was nothing compared to the ambulance ride through Pottsville, Pa. road. Broke l2,3,4 & collar bone. What happen was I got thrown off onto huge rock & the quad bounce off my chest according to my buddies watching me. Here I was worried if it was level at top of the hill & not a drop off that I had experienced as a younger man on my Yamaha TT400, that I rode a wheelie down, BUT never for got that lesson. Got the 4x4 after that.Wife had a fit when I bought it told me "You said you weren't riding any more" yeah right :p

I would recommend not doing 2 up on a 1 seater.
I bought a cheap 4x8 Harbor freight trailer to tow my KTM 500 and move things like snowblowers, furniture etc that it fits perfectly on. I don’t tow more than 2 hrs but I’ve upgraded wheel, tires bearings etc. I’ve never had any issues or problems with the harbor freight trailer but I didn’t really buy it to tow the 4 wheeler. I think there are better options out there for that. A new trailer isn’t necessarily better than a used one if you can change tires, wheels and bearings. I’m keeping an eye out for something better and a little bigger like a 5x10

I have a Sure Trac 5'x10' was gonna buy the 6'x10' but wife(who was buying for me as Bday gift) said that's too big to fit under the deck. Told No cause my last was 8'x8' & fit. I got the 5'x10', good thing is it's great on small back road as it's not wider then the 4Runner. Very well made Power Coated, Diamond plate fenders, 2x6 press treated floor, channel for LED light harness.15"wheels Tail gate fold fwd onto bed to fit under our deck. out of the weather. The pic W/4Runner is my 2018 TRD OR.IMG_0164 (1).jpg IMG_0194 (1).jpg IMG_1224 (1).jpg IMG_1225.jpg

Yep that’s exactly what I’m looking for. That’s a great multi use trailer. Nice.

Sorry But as far as Polaris goes Not heard MANY complaints on that product line, Can NOT speak for Artic Cat product. They're like the Kawasaki line on cycles. Them & Suzuki teamed up to compete W/Honda & Yamaha, wonder why, eh!???

I've been ATV'ing since age 9, and I still have my first ATV (1986 Suzuki 230). I also have a Honda ATC 110 in really good shape that I occasionally fire up.

This is the rest of my fleet: two 2015 Polaris Sportsman 570's and our 2019 Ranger 1000XP Crew (I call it the short bus lol). Going to sell the Ranger soon, we bought a Wrangler and I prefer that MUCH more on the trails. The Ranger is loud, dusty, cannot hear the radio over the harsh motor, etc.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
20170909_095705.jpg IMG_20180328_122321948.jpg I’ve got two 21 yr old 2003 Hondas, no belts for me. Getting ready for a cruise in the Pinenut Mountains with buddies.
The Foreman S has needed a float bowl o-ring in 21 yrs, that’s it. Shitty ethanol laced gas petrified the o-ring. I use it for dragging logs, plowing, spraying, pulling out sage and just general abuse, the wife likes riding it.
The yellow 400ex is really a built & tuned 440, waaaaay more power than suspension. Scary but fun.

Honda 700-4 Pioneer I bought as a roll-over insurance total 3 yrs ago($5K). Practicing flying a drone. It pretty much has the same engine/transmission as the Rincon only beefed up a bit for the added weight. So far so good for that, it’s slow but always seems to get you there and back.

I’ve not ridden either but have been around both as friends have them. I’ve heard good things about both of those 570 models from Polaris and can am and hear they are good machines.

The Polaris was at my dads farm & had battery problems. Not sure why, I replaced that battery a lot because it kept dying. It’s wasn’t as bad as the red arctic cat. That thing couldnt handle farm work at all. I’ll try to find the paperwork. Yes they were new

I replaced the OEM battery a few yrs ago W/MAT Sealed batt. The winch when plowing & having all 3 lights on takes a bit off charge. I keep all my things JD X320,ATV,HD all on Battery tender Jr.'s seems to keep them in great shape.
