Anyone go from a Taco to 4R? Thoughts?

July 2018 I bought a 2015 TRD Off Road Tacoma. Love it for getting back into the woods to haul firewood back home in the bed with a cap on it. Not the most comfortable for long driving trips though. Last August wife and I bought a 2020 TRD Off Road 4 Runner. We've so far kept it in the garage for winter until we get it undercoated. Wife luvs it as she sits up higher and drivers seat is so adjustable. So now we each have our ultra dependable, reliable vehicles and come spring we plan on a road trip to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, P.E.I. etc. in the 4 Runner to enjoy the comfort.

 

Yes…agreed…the 4R is simply more comfortable…

 

I didn’t “go”, I have both. Love my 2015 DC Off Road, and I use my 2017 4Runner SR5 Premium RWD as my DD.
They both just fit me. Comfortable and trouble free. Michelin tires on the 4R make it drive like my wife’s Lexus GX460.

And the rear cargo area - I can put a full set of mounted & inflated wheels & tires back there w/ no problem. Incredible really

 

I really enjoyed my Tacoma, and the only thing I miss from it is all the money I put into it

and those wheels. man, I loved those wheels.

 

I lost my 16 Tacoma in an accident and ended up going with a 23 ORP. I thought I would miss the truck and its utility but the only thing I miss is the time and money I invested into it. The 4Runner is a better vehicle for me 100%.

 

The only two things about the taco that I wish were in the 4R were the manual transmission and the hand brake. Other than that, I don't miss having a bed at all, the much shorter wheelbase and length come in really handy too.

Yeah agreed I actually didn’t realize how much easier the 4R was to drive with that shorter wheelbase….

 

I know the interior dimensions are similar (or even in some cases identical) but the 4R feels roomier inside.
Ride quality is pretty similar.
Overall I love my 4R much more than I did my Tacoma.

 

Yeah I’d think side to side in the front seat is the same…but seems “taller” and the back seat is definitely roomier for sure. More leg room, etc.

And that usable space in the cargo area is so nice to have. I only wish I would have bought one with the slide out cargo tray.

Pros and cons? The Tacoma was the absolute best looking truck I've ever owned - and the most reliable too. The thing I miss the most about it is the pickup bed. Although I don't haul stuff nearly as often as I used to, I do miss the utility of having a bed. The biggest reason for moving to the T4R was our 75-pound rescue pit bull Herbie. He didn't have much room in the back of an access cab Tacoma. He's got the whole back seat to himself in the T4R.

The T4R is a much more refined vehicle all the way around. It rides better, turns tighter and gets better mileage. The interior is far nicer than the Tacoma too. I was somewhat surprised that the T4R actually seems to tow our 22' Progression better than the Tacoma. One would think that the shorter wheelbase would work against it, but it doesn't.

 

Can you buy a slide out cargo tray and install it?

I agree with ya - miss the bed already too and it's not even summer yet! LOL...

 

I have read that you can buy them from the dealer and have them install them, but at a hefty price tag...

 

I've got a 2nd gen tacoma, SR5 4x4, but really wanted the TRD OR but had to settle. Now with a kid Im wanting more rear seat space and a sealed cargo area. I've got a topper on the taco but its not sealed well. The best thing the taco has going for it right now is that it has that paid off mod. I'd have to finance any 4Runner. I dont offroad much here in FL, I'd like to keep that option available, which is why I'm leaning towards one over a Rav4. But that rav4 hybrid MPG is enticing.

 

I hear ya on the Rav4 (they have a TRD OffRoad option). Only complaint I have hear about those is the obvious: It's so small, and with that goes a lot of road noise. But it may be a solution for you...and yes that MPG is tempting for sure...even the regular engine gets like 32 mpg on the highway, I think...

 

I really liked my Tacoma. It was a 6MT though. I never drove the auto, so I wasn’t familiar with the transmission complaints. I regeared to 5.29s and put Chevy 63” leaf springs. It rode and drove great. I’ve just always wanted a 4Runner, but was always convinced I had to have a truck.





Finally got one a 4R about 5 months ago. Wish they had a manual, but I’m okay with auto. Still completely stock. I kinda lost interest in offroading, so I doubt I’ll build the 4R like I did the Tacoma. I’m loving it so far, but it looks so…basic. Maybe I’ll do just a lift and tires for the pavement princess.

I did and have not looked back from my 17 Taco that I traded in because of issue with a leaking diff and leaking timing cover!! I have had a 19/21 and now a 23 4 Runners

3rd gen tacos are junk, I love my second gen. But with that said, my wife’s 4 runner is way nicer. We have the best of both worlds but when it’s time to get a new vehicle at 400k the taco will go to my daughter and I’ll get a 4 runner.

I'm moving on from my Taco (2020 ORDC). Prob 5th gen OR. Already has a cap on the bed.

 

Taco's and 4Runners go together...

 

I was in the same boat as most of you. My family just outgrew the Tacoma. The backseat is way too small, even though the kids are only 8 and 11, add a dog into the mix and it just didn’t work.

I absolutely loved the truck though. I took it to many places where I had no business being and it performed like an absolute mountain goat. I had a Bilstein 6112/5160 set up with Freedom Off-road UCA’s, rear Icon AAL, Westcott Sliders, full RCI Skids, and Method MR316 Wheels with 33” 285/70/17 BFG AT KO2’s.

I loved the build so much that I’m going the same route with the Bilstein 6112/5160 set up on the 4Runner. I’m changing up the tires and wheels for this build, going with OEM TRD Pro Wheels and “skinny” 33” tire, 255/80/17 Wildpeak AT4’s. I am also upgrading from the Freedom Off Road UCA’s to SPC UCA’s. Adding a set of Wheelers Off Road bump stops and we’ll be in business.

Suspension has been delivered, will be installing it in the next few weeks. Once I work a few OT shifts the Westcott Sliders and RCI skids will be ordered and installed shortly after as well.
