I just got my first book published on Amazon using KDP Direct. It was super easy and nearly free.

Luckily, my best friend is a published author beginning back in the 70's and offered to edit the book for free. He was also the one who encouraged me to write it. Thanks to him, I submitted a magazine article a few years ago to a trade magazine and not only was it published, but I won an award.

That success convinced me to try and write a novella in the mystery/thriller genre. Writing it was fun and I came up with a compelling character and story line.

Despite not having any formal education or training in writing, the finished book came together pretty well and is a fun read.

It's odd, but when I write on internet forums, my grammar is pretty bad and unimaginative. But when I sit down at my desk at home and start working on a book, what I produce is actually pretty good.

My process is to turn on the Alexxa to 80's music, pour a glass of wine or whiskey, and just start telling a story that I think is interesting.

I was curious as to if there were other authors on here and what route they took to getting their work out there.

Link to the book? I've written a few of my own articles/short stories, one of which front-paged on jalopnik. I haven't given much thought to writing beyond that.

    Are you former USFS LEO?

    Looks like a cool book.

    Series forthcoming?

I have had some photographs published in touring articles in MC mags authored by others, and I had an article and photos published in Toyota Trails but that's bush league shit...

Nope. Former federal park ranger with a friend that is a USFS LEO. Trying to get started on the next book; lot's of ideas, but trying to decide on a story line.

You may as well give it a shot. I started by submitting an article for a magazine and won an award. Gave me the confidence to write a novel, which is much harder, and easier, than it seems.
