I should be picking up my new 4R in the next couple of days and am thinking of asking my dealer to swap out the Dunlop Grandtrek AT20s with something else. My uninformed impression is that they are too much "highway" tires and counter to the advanced 4x4 system in my ORP.

Now, most of my driving is highway or in town, maybe 80%, with 19% on good gravel roads. It is the last 1% that bothers me. Once a month or so, I find myself on a rough road, foot-deep ruts (which can mostly be avoided with careful tire placement), steep inclines, water over the road, etc.

It would also be great to avoid having to swap out winter tires, so something that is snowflake rated would be great.

I would probably need to choose between the tires that the dealership offers in-house. These would be:

    Dunlop AT20s
    Bridgestone Dueler H/T 684 II
    General Grabber HTS60
    Nitto Terragrappler G2
    Yokohama Geolander H/T G056
    Yokohama Geolander A/T G015
    Goodyear Wrangler Steadfast H/T
    Goodrich Trail Terrain T/A
    Yokohama Geolander X-AT
    Toyo Open Country A/T III
    Nitto Terra Grappler
    Bridgestone Alenza A/S Ultra
    Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT
    Michelin Defender LTX M/S2
    Firestone Winterforce 2 UV

I was looking at Duratrac RTs, but saw that Goodyear recommends them for 70% off road and 30% on road. I think this is too far biased toward off road.

BF Goodrich Trail Terrain T/As seem to be snowflake rated and maybe not as aggressive as Duratrac RTs?

Or, given that 99% of my driving is highway/in town/easy gravel, should I just stick with the Dunlops and be a careful for that 1-2 hours a month when I might wish I had something more aggressive?

    Thanks for any advice.

That's Toyo ATiii = 3, every other tire in the world = 0

Turns out that within 1000 miles, they will change them and give me $100 credit per tire. They are also running a buy 3 get 1 free sale, so even with their somewhat inflated prices it will cost around $500 to swap them out.

    Thanks.

It's my Toyota dealership, Portland zone through the end of the month but nationwide in April (so I was told). Their prices do seem a bit higher per tire than other places, but with the 3/1 deal it works.

These two are on my short list for the April sale. Both have great reviews. Love the look of the Toyos. Cold truth is that I spend so much time on pavement. Would Toyos be a bad choice for 95% pavement?

    Yes, this is the question!

I was thinking that having too much all-terrain-iness on road is a minor inconvenience (noise, etc.), while having too little when you need it (even if it is 5% or 1% of the time) could be a serious issue.

I do wonder if there is something that would be a bit less all-terrain-y though. Something that would give a bit of a boost off road but not sacrifice too much on road, for those of with 95% on/5% off kinds of ratios.

    Good thinking,
With that on kind, give the General Grabber HTS60 in your list a look. Sounds like a off-road kinda looking highway terrain (H/T) could suite you best.
Was was this close to buying 285/70 General Grabbers All Terrains before I bought Mickey Thompsons. They’ve had great feedback in Canada, long running, and made by Continental

The mountain logo on the webpage ^ has a sun behind it, oops not winter rated.
The Grabber APT have the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake. Don’t see as many H/T with the snowflake, but plenty of lesser aggressive A/T’s have it

I recently got the newest version of the MS2 and they’re fantastic. Great wet/snow traction. Quiet.

The new version is an XL rated tire and they’ve beefed up the sidewalls. They are stiffer sidewalls than the old version. And the tread is almost a sticky rubber. They’re awesome tires. Balanced great.

Great to hear! They get decent off road reviews also. Sort of a stealth AT?

They feel far tougher to me than the Dueler HT’s. Comparison isn’t even close. Much stiffer sidewalls it seems.

Those tires aren't on the list but I'm sure OP thanks you very much. I mean it's not like he just said he does not want aggressive all terrains.
As @glwood54 would say, this isn't helpful :p

I vote for Michelin Defender LTX M/S2...these tires are excellent and they last a long time. My dad has them on his frontier and he has well over 70k miles on them. They're great for all weather conditions

Since your not looking to go offroad much id say they be perfect.

It’s comments like yours, on threads that I post and contributions I make to the community, that really tick me off.

So you don’t read OP’s post, don’t read the comments, don’t read his comments to the comments, and you write: hey everyone guess what I’m thinking of buying one of the most aggressive all terrains you can buy, in a year, maybe.
    Plz respond
