Hello all, new to the forum and in need of advice on an aftermarket remote start. I’m looking for recommendations on an aftermarket remote start that uses the factory key fob. Who makes the best most reliable unit? Thank you in advance!

I saw this one as well on Amazon. There are a few reviews on it and they seem ok. It seems like it going to come down to either the 12v brand or start x. Also thank you for the quick responses! Looking to get one installed before winter comes in full force.

I don’t have any personal experience with an auto start system but from reading many posts on this forum, I would say do your homework and choose wisely. Also make sure the installation is done correctly.

Several forum members have had electrical gremlins due to various installation issues.

    Best wishes :)

And that is my biggest fear. This is my wife’s daily driver and the last thing I want is for something to go wrong… I’m sure anyone who is married can relate

I looked into those starters, but opted to have it done at the dealer. For a few dollars more it will be covered by the dealer if I have any problems. Plus the last one I had done by the dealer lasted 14 years with no problems.

One of the benefits of an aftermarket, specifically speaking of the Accessorides one, the engine doesn't shut off when you open the door like OEM I believe. Really easy to install in 15 mins even to the non-techy person.

I believe after 2020 you can't get around the engine shut off when you open the door.
Below is a copy of Accissorides web page. Last sentence clearly states your vehicle will shut off.

TOYOTA 4RUNNER REMOTE START PLUG & PLAY KIT FOR 2020 2021 PUSH START

Now Available! 100% full plug & play!

Get the best remote start kit for your Toyota 4Runner. Easy installation can be completed anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour for most. No confusing diagrams, no sloppy wiring, no cutting, splicing, etc. Everything is done under the driver side dash on your 4Runner and one connector behind the glovebox on the passenger side. Follow our easy installation instructions and you'll be done in no time! Simply press the lock button 3 times from your factory OEM remote and your vehicle will start and run. The parking lights will remain on to let you know the vehicle is running. Once you are ready to drive simply unlock the truck with the remote and open the door. Your vehicle will shut off upon opening the door - just jump in, restart and go!

So I ended up going with the 12v system…. And, well it works great! Installation wasn’t bad even for a novice like myself and I’m happy with the results.

Next up is the trd grill conversion. Any recommendations on a good company to go through for that? Let me know, thanks!

Depends, if you want quality and not concerned with price, go OEM.
If you want cheap takeoff, go with a Chinese copy on Amazon.

I have this one sitting in my garage waiting to install. From looking at the instructions it appears a little more challenging then when I installed a similar unit on my tacoma.

But ill get it installed soon, the mornings are a bit chilly now.

But with the factory unit don't you have to pay a yearly subscription?

Ha! Mine has also been sitting waiting for me to install! The airbag part kind of freaks me out but I haven’t heard of anyone messing up so I’m sure I can handle it. I watched the video and it seemed to suck.

I used START-X; its really cheap compared to the competitors.

what I like: price, plug and play, uses oem key, can add on 3rd party accessories (eg long range remote, phone app).
what I don't like: unlocking via carlink app not available, but can remote start and lock via app.

I finally installed my Satrt-X today. Was really easy. I took my time and it was still about 30-40 minutes start to finish. I thought about making a video but was lazy and just wanted to get it done. It works.

I went with the Accessorides. Please do your research on the Start-X. From what I understand you can't use the unlock feature with the Carlink app. Since you have the 2022 model it has the push button start so the truck will turn off when you open your door. Many people criticize that feature but I'm fine with it. I think of it as an anti-theft feature in a sense.

Hi, I went with the guy who put one in back in my new 2015 Tacoma, it's all the guy does, it was one of these Advent : Pursuit Car Security & Remote Start (adventproducts.com). Mike was done in ten minutes, only pulled the panel that's under the steering wheel and moved the position of the steering wheel. Runs for 15 minutes but he told me it has a sensor that will shut the truck off if it gets too hot. Summer time I guess to run the ac. I never do that, so I'm not too concerned. It does shut off when you open the door, which also doesn’t bother me as I'm not rushing out there in cold winter mornings. It’ll already be off by the time I get in the truck.

I highly recommend you folks get something I learned here. have the Toyota tech program your remote to put the windows down. I live in MA and we get both kinds of extreme weather. So nice having all those windows down before you get in to a blistering hot truck
