Anyone replace their OEM head unit? If so, what did you replace it with? After daily use, what do you recommend?

I ordered a Kenwood Excelon DNX996XR with the iDatalink Maestro, Metra dash kit, and all of the harnesses pre-made from Crutchfield.

So far, I've love it. There are only a few cons, so those first.

No volume control knob- it's pushing buttons or holding one down from now on. I got used to this in a couple months.

Booting up takes over 20 seconds. The stock unit is much faster, but this hasn't been too difficult to live with.

Trying to use Android Auto with a Galaxy Note 10+ was incredibly frustrating. Followed the instructions perfectly, connected and seemed to function as it should... then within a few days it pretty much bricked my head unit. The phone and HU both kept switching their wifi, bluetooth and some other type of connection on and off repeatedly. This was apparently an issue with android auto, so I switched to basic bluetooth connection and now all is well.

The backup camera image was never great, but appeared yellowish and pixelated on the Kenwood. Switching my reverse bulbs to the JDM Astar 921 LEDs largely solved this problem. Now my backup image is actually a little clearer than stock, if a bit too "cool white" for my tastes... but I wouldn't trade it for the stock image.

The pros are legion... so let me keep this part brief.

It sounds better in every way, and I have the stock speakers still. The volume seems just a bit louder, but MUCH cleaner. The iDatalink Maestro gives me all kinds of vehicle data, and let's me use the steering wheel controls... it even adds extra functionality to those same buttons. It also let's me change all kinds of options, like holding down the unlock button on my fob to open all the windows and moonroof, and deciding how the 4R beeps, lights up etc. when locking/unlocking. Oh, and I no longer have to worry about my whole truck unlocking as soon as I put it into park, which was a serious potential issue while I was in bad areas. I had people jump into my truck as soon as I put it into park before I had this HU and changed that setting... huge stress reliever!

Installed it myself with very little guidance, and I cussed and worried the whole time. The only way I knew that everything was hooked up correctly was by fixing my mistakes, and driving it for these past few months.
Oh, and do be sure to install your GPS reciever in the correct orientation... Garmin gets confused if it thinks you're hauling ass in reverse... :)

It's really nice head unit. Sound is amazing. But th ed runner did come with JBL all around so guess that helps. Android Auto is really nice. I use the note 10+ with USB-C to HDMI. Screen mirror when I want to watch espn, netflix etc.

Do you have pictures of it? Does it block the vents?

Can you position the screen a little lower so it doesn’t get in the way of the vents; is it adjustable?

    Nice work!!!

Yes but I believe I have it set in the middle. But the vents are fine for m . As I turn the driver side to driver and passenger side to the passenger.

The Halo looks like someone glued an ipad screen on top of the OEM radio. Jez don't look right...

Best looking unit hands down. Sits flush with the dash, bigger screen, suppers Apple car play/android auto, and doesn’t break the bank. Win win:spending:

I'm looking at the Halo 9 also. I've read in someof the reviews that it wouldn't dim when the dash went dim at dusk. Is this true, or is it just someone not chasing the correct wiring and hooking it up?

That's typical of most aftermarket radios I've bought. Inexcusable in my opinion. There's no cutting/splicing here, all plug'n play. For big-name outfits like Alpine to not provide dimming of the panel face is downright ignorant.

In the past I always used Pioneer and they always could dim with the dash. But I guess from what you're saying is that it's not that common a function anymore, eh?

    I agree, it's absolutely inexcusable.

That being said, I did what I should have done at first and decided to look up the owner's manual for the Alpine Halo. http://support.alpine-usa.com/products/documents/OM_iLX-F309_EN.pdf
Under "Screen Lighting" it appears as tho it does have an automatic ambient lighting dimmer with can be in 3 settings, Auto, On or Off. IT also goes to say that you can adjust it down further at night manually.

    Maybe this will help others.

I have the 8500NEX w/inline maestro in my 19Pro.. its bad ass for sure.. looks super clean. Only issue I have is that it doesnt allow you to use the steering controls to fast forward or rewind tracks.. also the steering wheel button config is apparently NOT customizable which is frustrating.. I want left right to be previous and next track, but up and down does that.. Have you installed the 8500 yet?

I've since changed out the radio to a T9 and I'm happy to report that the display dims when the headlights come on for night driving.
