You got me curious, so I went to their website. You're right - the price is now $403 and change. It must have been a limited time discount.

I do find Toyota's interior plastics kind of soft. I used the pry tool in the bottom corners near the bottom of the dash to remove both pieces, or to at least get them popped out enough to grab with my hands. I figured if it left a mark, it wouldn't be that noticable. I didn't have to remove the section with the cigarette lighter.

Nice!! I just ordered the accessory meter display this morning. The harness is supposed to be at my house tomorrow. I'm hoping to have a mild day here in the next few weeks where I can dedicate a few hours to this.

Does anyone happen to have a photo of the oem clock only display unit once removed? I've not seen how that compares to the AMD display unit out of the truck. Just curious...

    Curious.

The reason I asked is the AMD from Toyota has the circled part on the bottom (a little hard to see, from photo by @medium.rare.pepe in post #156), which does not appear to be on the OEM clock display part, unless I just can't see it:

    upload_2024-1-26_12-9-45.png
The AMD I received from Toyota has the same part on the bottom of it...mine is at home, so I do not have a photo of it presently. Can anyone else besides @medium.rare.pepe confirm that their AMD looks like this?

The circled part is the compass. The compass on the AMD is independent of the compass from the radio (which is also displayed on the cluster).

I installed mine this past weekend as the weather was nice. Huge shoutout to Old Red for the painstaking work of figuring out how to wire it seamlessly and making a plug and play harness. The instructions were easy to follow. The plug where you have to add the one wire was a bit of a pain as there wasn’t much wiggle room with it. My ORP has a few different colored wires in that connector but I was able to recognize a few around where the wire goes. All in all a pretty easy install and it was totally worth it.

Dumb question - one of the first steps is to disconnect the battery...positive or negative lead, or does it matter?

Thanks. I've been waiting for warmer weather and was reviewing the instructions from @Old Red. The part I'm a bit mystified about is hooking up the two wires to the connector in the instrument cluster...the photo is a bit hard to see. I guess when I get around to taking everything apart it will make more sense.

I got ya. It's really simple and will make more sense when you get the instrument cluster out, It is a little hard to see because the harness doesn't have a lot of slack, but just take your time and look 2-3 times on instructions and where the added wire plugs in at.

70 degrees out today, I'm finally going in. Wish me luck - I've been very reluctant to take the dash apart, terrified to disassemble the instrument cluster (especially the "hood softex" part, and electronics leave me petrified...once I get it all apart, I imagine the rest will be a piece of cake.

Did I mention being terrified? I almost decided to just live with a clock...

It is very easy to take the dash apart. Do not be afraid to pull things. Everything is plastic clips, so nothing will happen to them.
You will have to remove the head unit to access the meter display. But just remove the 4 10mm bolts and pull it out and rest it on your gear lever. Keep a thick soft cloth on the lever for the head unit to rest. It will give you enough space to work around the meter display.
I don't even need the meter display but just opened mine to see what's all in the area. Gentle but firm is the key.

Success. AMD in and works as it's supposed to. The only thing left to do is calibrate the compass. It's pretty close, just off a tick from the instrument cluster compass by a few degrees.

Sure beats just a having a clock.

Just checking in... received my harness a while back, and it has been sitting while I try to snag the best deal on the Combo Meter.

Anybody getting a good price online, free shipping, etc? Man, I wish I had bought it during the Black Friday parts sale Toyota was having!! Didn't even know this mod existed back then.

Best I could find was $360 at Lewis Toyota w/ free shipping last month, but when another member tried the same place, it was higher. I'd say keep shopping...

OMG. At what point do we as a community come to terms that price gougers are preying on our obsessions?

    Looks great though!

FYI, some Toyota parts retailers are charging full retail - $485 PLUS shipping on top of that!

Figured I needed to share an update on my installation of this mod. I haven't been as active on the forum as I have in FB groups and for that I apologize!

So last July, after I had all the required parts arrive and in hand, I finally tackled the AMD swap mod.. and did it all by myself too! Went from the basic 2021 display to the display from a 2014 Trail Edition. No idea why Toyota changed this as it was perfect back in the day.. but I've got it installed and working perfectly! First time tearing my dash down this far at once but it was totally worth it!! Loving the extra info in the new (older) display.. now I don't have to hunt for it in the cluster or radio settings!

Major props and thanks to @Old Red for not only the wiring harness but for what is by far the best write-up/guide I have ever seen. Before entering the 4Runner world, I had a 2012 Ram 1500 (traded on for the 4R) that I modded quite a bit of electronics/lights on and I have read (and written) a fair share of write-ups and the guide for this install was above all I have previously used by leaps and bounds! It made the install less daunting and so much easier than I imagined it would be. In total, the entire project took me about 3 hours. I went step by step and forced myself not to rush anything. The end result had me so giddy!

It's been 8 months since I performed this swap/mod and everything is still working perfectly. I smile every time I glance at my center console to check the outside temp or my DTE or MPG average or the compass. I really LOVE having all of this info readily available at a glance and no longer having to dig in the instrument cluster to find it. Yeah, it cost me a couple of benjamins but I consider it money well spent!

(Side note: I am really loving how easily this rig pops apart like a tonka toy! So much easier to dismantle for an install than my Ram ever was!)

Glad to see this mod is still popular. I bought my harness about a year ago and I've been waiting to find a good deal before buying one. I had someone selling their 2014 Trail about an hour away, but they refused to swap clocks even when I offered $200. They didn't want to damage anything on the interior :(
