    I don't use the navigation
I won't tolerate any of this shit, including paying $60k for a truck with a 2.5L. GX550 here I come. And I don't give a rats ass about warranties, I will be squeezing Tundra power out of the GX.

The best subscription Toyota offers is 80 bucks or 120 bucks a year.

How do I get started using the Destination Assist feature in my vehicle?

You can begin using Destination Assist by initiating one of the following:
    • Initiate the wake-up-phrase such as “Hi Toyota, call Destination Assist” to be connected to a live agent.
    • Select the menu option in the bottom right corner of the multimedia display, then select “Call destination assist” to be connect to a live agent.
    • Select “Push-to-Talk” on steering wheel and say “Destination Assist” to be connected to a live agent.

A banner notification will appear for the duration of your call. Ask agent for desired point of interest and agent will send destination to your Cloud Navigation system. Select “Go now” to begin route guidance.
A Drive Connect subscription is required to use the Destination Assist feature.”

This is just a crazy feature for someone to pay for in 2024. Instead of just plugging your phone in and saying “hey siri, give me directions to ……….” I understand this may be for older folks but still insane to me lol

if I could find a vehicle with low to no miles that was 10 to 20 years old and could afford it, I would be driving it. Oh and isn’t rusted to shit either.

this is not my point, I don’t need to be tracker while driving, I don’t need internet to drive my vehicle.
Folks are continue to just accept this shit, well I’m sick and tired of buying concert tickets and getting my info hacked, the government can’t even keep our info safe, but what to hell, let’s fill the computers and clouds with more for folks to hack.

    we are the product now.

They already have all the info they want. That fight has essentially been lost.

The new fight is if customers will allow manufacturers to continually charge owners to use their own property. There’s even rent payments on some new refrigerators being sold, so it’s not just cars.

A couple decades of clicking “agree” on every app with fine print that we downloaded pretty much surrendered complete access to 3rd parties, and torched our privacy. So, that train left the station a while back.

Using that info to directly leverage money from customers is a relatively new wrinkle. As soon as people start getting notifications that their insurance rates are going up, or it’s customer- pay at the dealer b/c their Land Cruiser snitched on them….Then, enter the lawyers.

Car based on-board nav has its place. It’s extremely useful if you are out in the boonies exploring new areas if there isn’t a cell signal. Lots of people get hung up on looks and think it’s silly and useless if it looks old. Well, there are US nuclear subs out and about navigating and sensing with equipment that’s 30 or 40 years old, because it works.

If toyota won’t let owners use the onboard equipment that comes on the vehicle without charging subscriptions, they should at least have the decency to offer models without a huge useless screen in the middle of the dashboard for those that don’t want to pay.

Gotta wonder how many people will be whining about having to use an actual map. OH, the HORRORS!

Good point! I also try to make a point to download offline maps of an area I'm heading to if I suspect I'll have shitty reception.

In my 2017 taco, I used the nav system when I was in the wood or on trails. I keep the breadcrumb feature on, so I could always back track if needed.

I’ve also tried to use it in town just to see what it could do. I laughed hysterically at the routes it would give me, they all took a lot more time to get anywhere

With Google maps, it's pretty easy. You click the top right corner to bring up the menu..

    Screenshot_20240918_133156_Maps.jpg

    -then click on "offline maps"

    Screenshot_20240918_133219_Maps.jpg

-then click "select your own maps "

    Screenshot_20240918_133235_Maps.jpg

-then choose the area you want to download. It will usually ask you to use Wifi.

Thanks! Will that process download as much zoomed in detail as it would have with a cell signal?

I used to knock those who use navigation for routine drives but then it helped me avoid delays so I use it to check for trouble when departing.

The horse may have bolted but horses are still leaving today. My data from X years ago is less useful than data now so mitigation efforts are worth it in my humble opinion but of course it does feel daunting being up against 360 degrees of corporations. Yuck.

I do the same. I find myself taking alternate routes home from work most of the time lately. I'd rather drive a few extra minutes and miles than stare at taillights on the freeway.

Mitigation is key but it takes effort and most people don't want to put in the work.

The fact everything seems to be opt-in by use only doesn't help. Either you don't use anything or you give up all rights to do so. Not a huge fan of the EU but their cyber laws of having to manually opt-in after the fact rather than opt-in by default are commendable (i think those were passed, could be wrong).

The US continually shoots those types of proposed laws down because, you know, capitalism and money

Apple, Google, HERE Maps offer offline functionality out of the box. I've even grabbed multiple, I like to use Apple Maps for general routing and Google for POI data, mission critical routing.

I remember when offline turn-by-turn navigation was a selling point on some phones, it's been over a decade since!

    Which phones?

I have Google maps, and it won't navigate, or even show me a route, unless I'm I have reception sometimes.

Edit: aside from areas I have downloaded. But, I don't recall ever seeing advertisements about that function.

A lot of people don't realize you can download Google maps to your phone, for off-line use.

Really nice on travel when you're not sure the area you will be in will have service.

I had a Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone way back (in cyan!) and they touted Nokia/HERE Maps navigation + offline maps - you could download areas by state.

    https://blog.gsmarena.com/nokia-tak...e-the-best-location-services-in-the-business/

Apple Maps (which was brand spankin’ new) and Google Maps just came out with turn-by-turn nav around that time IIRC.

(I enjoyed Nokia/Here Maps but I would find the navigation to be solid but POI database quite lacking compared to Google Maps.)

200 miles east of Seattle deep into the Cascades, and you lose internet for a good 70 miles of that, at least in my case as I use T-Mobile. Having Offline maps js crucial

Many people here pointed to Android Auto and Google maps. This is workable solution, but doing so seriously compromises your privacy. This gives Google access to a lot of additional data that they would not normally have from just your phone. For example, they will know if you voted in person (because you drove your car to a polling station). They will know where you shop and what time (because you drove your car to a store). All of this will impact what ads they try to show you, what "personalized" search results they will provide in search, and what videos they will recommend you through YouTube. This effect is very widespread, as they literally will try to shape your perception of reality. Even if you are not overly concerned about your privacy, you should be concerned for your mental health. While Apple is by no means respectful of your privacy, they are lesser evil because of how they use your data.

Pause and seriously consider, is it a good thing that Google knows exactly where you are at all times (because you give it permissions by using Google maps), who you communicate with (because you use Android), and where you drive to by yourself (because you use Android Auto)?

Last but not least, in any real emergency cell will be down. This means that any online GPS won't work.

This is why offline GPS is so important, Garmin or in-dash GPS with offline maps, because you can leave your phone behind and go shopping, visit a friend, etc..

Google knows all that whether you use Maps or not. As long as you login to android with your email address that's it. Google even keeps a timeline on you that you can also access.

Always being tracked by Google is not inevitable. You can use iPhone. If you are technically savvy, you can de-Google Android. If you are not, you can purchase Faraday pouch and put your phone into one (at the time when privacy is needed). You can't easily do that with a car.
