4wd not engaging

    i have a 1990 4runner. it is an automatic trans. the problem is the 4wd is not engaging, neither low 4 or hi 4. is there any advice. this was happening previous to transmission rebuild and is continuing. do soleniods do the shifting. point me in the right direction.
