Are you sure all the trims are represented? Prior to about 2017 there was the “Trail”, similar to the OffRoad. Then there’s the Premium variant. Unless that’s TMI for the purpose of this poll.

That would go against the way Toyota does things. At that rate, why not offer the PRO rack on any trim? Or PRO grill?

Why would they offer the biggest upgrade the Off-Road has over the SR5 on the SR5?

Aside from that, the OR is barely any more expensive than an SR5. want a locker? Buy an OR.

Mention the trails, I will add them. Premium is kind of not a trim so I excluded it.

May be don't change. Old Trail owners can vote for TRD Offroads and new Trail owners can vote for SR5. (IMO)

If it was as easy to get a Pro as an ORP more would gravitate towards the Pro in my opinion. Solid build under warranty. However, reality being what it is with dealer allotment and mark ups on the Pro. I’ll take ORP for less $ and more individual choice. Still not sure about KDSS after reading all the conflicting opinions, lol.

If everyone here votes, the Off Road trims win hands down.

For me, I'm loving the Limited.

But I'm confused by this post below. @kmeeg, are you saying you put smaller wheels and tires on your wife's Limited in order to lower its height, so she could load stuff in the back more easily? You actually downsized the tires? So now the speedometer and odometer read way too high? I must be missing something here...

PS -- @The last breed: I'd make the Limited/Nightshade a single category. They're exactly the same but for the color of the chrome etc. The difference is purely cosmetic, and even then it's very minor. The Nightshade is just a Limited with blacked out trim.

Good point, this can definitely get complicated.

The Offroad and Offroad Premium are technically different trims. So there's an argument for including both, even though the differences aren't that big. But if they're not included separately then we certainly shouldn't have separate categories the Limited and Nightshade. There's much less difference between them than there is between the Offroad and Offroad Premium -- just the color of the chrome and wheels. Otherwise they're 100% identical.

Interesting choice to give Offroad with KDSS its own category. That's not a trim -- KDSS is an option on some trims. But KDSS is definitely a significant and mechanical differentiator from the regular Offroad. So it feels worthy of its own category.

The Trail issue is also interesting. There could be "Old Trail" and "New Trail" categories. As I recall, one is more of an SR5 and the other is more of an OR. Then there's the new (and misnamed) TRD Sport. It's a mashup of the SR5 and sort of the Limited, since it gets the latter's XREAS and wheels.

IF on the other hand the goal is simplicity, and to reveal the basic dividing lines between members of the forum, I'd propose:

    SR5
    Offroad
    Limited
    Pro

These are really the main categories, as they have significant mechanical differences, not just cosmetic differences.

Folks with "mashup" trims would then decide whether they were more like the SR5 or Offroad, based on the 4WD system. They either have the SR5's part-time 4WD with electronic shifter, or the OR's part-time 4WD with manual shifter and rear diff lock. (None of those mashup trims are really like the Limited cause none have full time 4WD).

    Just my 2 cents :D

Trd offroad winning the poll doesn't mean that is the best. It only means it's the common. TRD Offroad is the worst trim if you ask my wife.

Let's go to the tire question. Let me explain this way. If you change the stock wheel and tire from Limited to stock stock SR5/ TRDOFFROAD/ TRD pro you get more rubber. Your spedo meter has zero impact. When you put a good amount of load in the back you don't feel uncomfortable looking at the tire thinking is this too much of a load. As below picture shows you get extra 1.5 inches of rubber between the road to the bottom of you wheel. Since there is more rubber not only height wire since there is more rubber on the width wise it will help on a load where the 17 tire will not squish like the 20. This extra rubber will not only help you to carry a good amount of load it will also help to protect the wheel from damage if you hit a poth hole or even if you run over a curb by accident. More rubber will also help you in comfort department as that rubber is you first level of shock absorber.

The key for functionality is look for more rubber and less wheel size.

BTW, this is from what I have gathered from the internet. Since I'm not an auto engineer I could be wrong.

The original Trails had all the off-road stuff packed into them and KDSS as an option.

The new Trail is just a really nice looking SR5.

I bought the Offroad Premium. Planned on changing out the suspension when I bought it. I might have considered a Pro if Cement was the Pro color for 2019. If I'm not mistaken, you couldn't (initially) get the Pro with a sunroof that year either.

I think I'm going to quit thinking about which trim is most popular, better, worse, prettier or useful and go put some mud on my fenders.... FWIW, all trims are better than not having a 4Runner.

    Time for a beer!

I wanted an SR5 to build, but ended up with an SR5P after looking at OR's. I actually have grown to really like the "leather" seats and the sunroof. There is no functional difference with the dial vs. lever for 4wd, and with the money I saved I put in a good lift, two sets of wheels and tires plus sliders. I also remove the rack entirely and when with Rhino Rack ditch tracks- it helps the MPG's but still allows me to load up with racks when I need it.
