It was integrated in the Toyota app in my head unit on my Year/Model 4Runner.

Can you please explain further? Facts on these matters are in short supply and I’d love to know where you got your information. My understanding is that while the head unit provides some scant interface to the DCM, the DCM is still doing the recording and transmitting. I’m happy to be shown I’m wrong.

Edited to add: the DCM has its own separate GPS and cell phone antennae.

Since my 2019 does not have built in LTE or connected services, SOS, the data would be shared from the head unit to my phone/the Toyota care app. So by removing the head unit, DCM data cannot not be shared through my phone service or connected app services. 2020 and newer this is a whole different story since they added the SOS feature with independent services not relying on connected services.

Interesting. Does your 4Runner have a DCM?

Do you have a shark fin antenna on the roof?

Oh yea no SOS button means no cellular bits, and I believe even connected 2019’s and earlier used 3G so that’s long since been toast.

Yeah, and they used the App connectivity to your phone as a potential long term solution. Killed that one. ;)
