4Runner Data Collection

Has anyone contacted toyota to stop the data collection they perform from your vehicle? According to their Privacy Policy....

"Like all modern vehicles, your Toyota vehicle collects and transmits a range of data to Toyota, including the vehicle’s location, driving data (such as acceleration, braking and engine sensor readings) and vehicle health information (such as odometer readings, oil life, and information from the onboard diagnostic system).

 

A lot of us have contacted them to shut this feature off. Ask yourself "Why do they really need this information?"

Answer: So they can sell it to others. Why do you think insurance rates have gone up so much the last 18 months? From the data sold to them from Toyota, Honda, Ford, Hyundai, Volvo, Jeep, GM, etc... Insurance companies look at that data and go "Whoa, that guy accelerates really fast and brakes hard A LOT. Time to up his rates (or hers) by 28%!"

Toyota will tell you that turning this off will break or disable other features, but trust me, you want this feature turned off as soon as possible. I don't want Toyota to know when I'm due for an oil change or tire rotation. Stay out of my freakin' business.

you can also just press the sos button and talk to the rep to disable to data collection

 

Toyota now offers opt-out from data collection, by calling Toyota Connected Services and asking to decline the Master Data Consent they will disable all data collection on their end. However, until SIM is cancelled or disabled, DCM continues transmitting this data out.

Why would my insurance rate rise? I'm a safe driver who obeys traffic laws.

Maybe your rate wouldn't rise if you didn't drive in an unsafe manner. Or you do you and be silly enough to try hide your poor driving skills...

 

The common misnomer is "Hey, I drive great so my rates should never go up!" But that's not right. Because the way others drive effects you and your rates. Just like if all the houses in your zip code have their roof replaced because of a bad hail storm. Sure, your house was spared and there was no damage.

But the insurance companies paid through the nose to fix the other 99.99% of the houses. To recoup that cost, EVERYONE had their rates raised. Have you ever heard the phrase "A rising tide lifts all ships." ?

Sure, and that's why I AM FORCED to pay for the selfishness of dangerous drivers.

You missed the point. My rates don't go up because of the way I drive. Rates go up because insurance is a RISK POOL.
And drivers who drive in a manner that causes their rates to go up, because they are a higher risk to have a claim, cause everybody's rates to rise.

When the tin foil hat brigade TRIES to hide their risky driving from the insurance company they are STEALING from the insurance company... and from ME.

Say, here's some fun! Name ONE basic thing you use everyday that HASN'T gone up in price in the last 15 years.

Flower prices have been very stable over the last two years in my "region"

 

It’s not about whether folks here are a “safe” driver or not. It’s about freely giving these companies extra rope to hang you and calling those who actually understand the issue “tin foil hats”.

Do you never exceed the speed limit? Have you never braked hard after being cut off?

Would you like law enforcement or anyone willing to pay to potentially have easy access to your vehicle’s whereabouts? (this is an easy fourth amendment side-step)

It’s not about what you believe you’re doing, it’s all up to whoever is interpreting the data.

Oops, you’ve exceeded 85 mph in a Corolla GR and it reported you to Toyota, warranty void!

Oops, you’ve avoided an accident, but the computer doesn’t know that, it just sees a maneuver that was “dangerous”, you might be risky!

These may not all be in effect today, but the past couple years have shown us nothing is off limits.

Edit: Oh yea, and Big Data, algorithms and things like that can find odd correlations that the company can decide is worth the error rate. What if you so happen to have a driving tic that correlates to increased risk? You can’t just call and fix that, if you notice and someone at the company will get a pat on the back for “smart” application of “AI” or “data”

 

Exactly. Very well said. It's like the movie Minority Report. The insurance company is trying to punish us BEFORE something happens. I remember reading about the GR Corolla owner who had his engine work denied by Toyota because they said he was speeding and THAT is what caused it to catch on fire.
