The rear door handles are actually a nod to the original (and damn great) Pathfinders. The 1st and 2nd gen Xterrras had them as a tribute to the Pathy and it's cool that this one (if this is a real thing, I haven't really looked, this is the first I'm seeing it) has them, too.

What I don't love is the queer roofline. If you remove the roof rack it's even more awful.

Other than that I always really liked my Xterra, had it been a 6 speed I may well have kept it.

New Sequoia pricing. Some fellow on the internet was justifying it by comparing it to the outgoing Land cruiser. Sequoias are pretty awesome but not this awesome.

The $15,000 price hike from one year to the next on a TRD pro Sequoia is crazy. We don't want or need that expensive IMAX motor or 10 speed transmission. It was excellent just like it was. I don't get it. If Toyota is turning itself into a luxury brand when is it going to create another truck brand that's affordable??

I wonder if this is their way of making us pay for the conversion to electrification?

I sure hope the 4Runner doesn't experience a similar price hike. But, I suspect it will.

As far as the new motors; I think a lot of people will be happy with better fuel economy and more power. I just hope they can keep it reliable.

It's really not a bad m/o. The 22R-E is ridiculously reliable, as were the 4Runners that had them. I think a big reason truly was that the engine wasn't strong enough to break itself or the drivetrain. I'll take that approach any day.

The 22s made the brand. The 80s pickups and 4Runners with the 22R motors felt a lot more powerful than the modern ones do. Weight to horsepower ratio was better back then, I reckon.

I'm thinking the early M series motors and B series diesels had a hand in it. And, maybe the other R series engines before '81. I think Toyota was doing ok before the 22R. :D

Sure are. I love the front fake vent cutouts that replicate the OG hood. Even the rims are a flashback to the original auto locking hub alloy's. Im loving it.

Maaayyybe! Stateside, I think it was the 4x4 1980 pickups that started earning respect for Toyota. I think they had the 20R. By 1984 they were dug in like a tick, undeniably solid trucks.

That might be true. I get the impression they weren't very well established in the US back in the '70's. But, they had some pretty cool stuff before then, especially overseas.

Never was a Nissan fan. My 84 Supra almost was totaled, and was repaired at a combination Toyota/Nissan dealership body shop. The manager worked for the Nissan side. He told me that Nissan used substandard parts, including even thinner belts and hoses. Plus. I was never a fan of let's make a Corolla but cheaper, call it a Sentra, and under-price it by making it lower quality.

Pricing has gotten insane. I plan to keep my old one and rebuild it as long as possible.

Yeah the Pathfinder (along with the chevy Blazer and Honda Pilot) became mommy-mobiles. My wife has one. bActually fun to drive and nice inside, but I'd rather be seen in my gas-guzzling but manly looking 4Runner -or an old Xterra.

Totally agree! I don' want something that looks like the new soccer Mom type of ride (Blazer/Pilot and I include new Explorer as well in my opinion). I hope they don't mess up the look for the 6th Gen--glad I have a 5th

all full-size SUVs are kind of luxury vehicles now. Yukons, Tahoes, Expeditions and Armadas are all pretty tricked out - Sequoia is now both the newest of the bunch and overall still the best so they charge what they want.

People who buy full size, body on frame SUVs these days make bank - it's not like the 90s where Suburbans were every man vehicles.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
The ease of service helps too, it encourages maintenance which adds to longevity.

I think this could be a factor, but I think it was also about how overbuilt they are. It's like a tractor engine. Heck, it sure sounds like one! :D

When you look at specs, they made pretty respectable power for the size at that time.

Textile looms, then home and commercial sewing machines later on. Then in the early 30s, the Japanese military required vehicle production for their war w China.
So the automotive division was built as a seperate company.
