What years specifically does the 4.0 v6 have head gasket leaks? I have read 2003-2005. Is this documented anywhere? Can anyone with a high mileage 2006 comment and confirm they are golden? I am looking at a 2006 later today and want to be sure I am in the clear!

I’m sure you would be fine with an 06. I’m not sure that the 03-05 have a huge problem with head gaskets. I’ve heard of 03-05 going high miles with no problems and I’ve heard of others that haven’t. I think it’s hit or miss. However you see it the problem was fixed by 06.

I’ve also read that 2006 and later had the updated gasket design. Not all the early ones fail but any vehicle could spontaneously develop a head gasket leak. I wouldn’t hesitate buying a 2006 or older 4runner if it was cared for and the price was right.

OK guys, the vehicle I am looking at was manufactured 10/11/05. Was this after the design correction?

Possibly no. That’s very early in the production year.

Its a 2006 to clarify according to vin/emission label. The manufacturer date on the door/Carfax is 10/11/05.

I’m not sure when exactly the changeover was. If it was well taken care of, you’ll probably be ok either way. Not all the 03-05’s develop HG issues, even if it did have the old design in it.
