265 70r 17" vs 285 70r 17" how much off road advantage is the 285 in sand/mud

Maybe Tinker should do a float test between 285-265.

Personally, if I’m worried about whether my car will float, I’ll bring a boat.

 

If you want to see some strange stuff, go out to Glamis dunes. They have had some crazy shit out there. I used to love sitting at the bottom of the wall and watch all the crazy’s.

 

LoL! I'm just talking about floating on deep sand, and other soft surfaces like deep snow. Airing down helps a lot. But, starting with a bigger footprint is even better.

Lol slopemaster- true. Everyone who buys a 4tr do it for different reasons. This is my 3rd. Life events determine why I over thought and over spent on others experience. Most weren’t wrong but i missed the mark. Too many variables on tires/wheels for where you live and what you want to do— road, dirt, water, sand, etc. Add atmosphere pressure, ground hardness/moisture, terrain, etc. is never forgiving no matter how many times you drive. If you are going off roads (beach, lake, high altitude, sand, dirt, snow or rock). There is no one solution- end of of the day, tires are tires and it’s about driving skill- which a few mentioned, which took me a few years and saved some me money.

My pov- we buy these vehicles because it challenges our curiosity to explore (weird, huh?) imo, we do it because its about adventure and learning and tackling things we dreamed of as kids- maybe to escape. It has been about learning and figure sh!t out and those have been there took time to share and show you/us to be building and trying something different—- to explore the world.

if you want the light weight/fitment benefits of a 265 but need the wider footprint for floatation, the Wildpeaks in SL 115T might be a solid pick. they're a "big 265" in the sense that they're nearly as wide as a 285 but keep a 32" height.

 

Not sure I understood what you said. Did your mean Falkens are light weight and bigger? Just compared to my old Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac specs and seems not true.
(BTW, I have Falkens now too. I found them cheap at Walmart and Discount Tire price matched.)

I went with the 255/75 r17 KO2 and I am happy with the size. Fuel Econ same as stock for me. About 32” diameter. The narrower width had not been an issue.

 

i can't decipher that chart but a 265 Wildpeak in SL is 45lbs and a 9" tread width per Tirerack. i'll admit its a bit short of a proper 32" height though.

 

I think Tire rack specs are pretty off compared to the real data sheet from Falken website. Discount Tire specs seems pretty good but not perfect.
