You'll get better mpg using premium fuel.

That’s pretty terrible for a hybrid.

I understand that Toyota would definitely round up for advertising reasons. But I am 4-5 mpg shy. That’s a lot.
Hey, I really like this SUV and it has many great things. I can live with the some what exaggerated mpg numbers.

The issue is the engine change was the sacrifice for better mpgs, and it doesn’t sound like that was a worthy trade.

I'd give it a few thousand more miles to really see how the fuel economy is going to be. But, it seems like the hybrids have been generally falling short of the EPA ratings.

Mileage always varies too, even if the 5th gen in Fuelly is on average bang-on with its 17-18 MPG average, individual results vary widely.

My residence and office location change alone has bumped my average from 18 to 20 MPG consistently.

Turbo trucks tend to overperform to varying degrees on paper too. My NA I4 Sorento and the turbo I4 Ranger from a few-couple years ago had similar ratings on paper.

I don't think the primary role of the hybrid electric motor in the 6th gen was intended to be enhanced fuel efficiency but rather additional power/torque.

I believe it was to bring more vehicles to the same platform and the engine was supposed to be more efficient.

I have about 3K miles on my ORP (non-hybrid) and Fuelly App shows 21.2 mpg average over the last 1894 miles. About 30/70 split on city/highway.

Yes, the 4 cylinder was meant to get better fuel economy than the previous engine, which it does.

But, I believe what @5thToy is saying is that the hybrid version wasn't necessarily intended to get better fuel economy than the turbo 4 alone, as much as it was to add power. If you look at the EPA estimate, there's not a big difference between the hybrid and non-hybrid versions.

Interesting, one would assume going hybrid would be for efficiency. And the added power would be a bonus.

not necessarily. Look at the performance car market. They are all adding electric motors to already powerful ice platforms to compete in the horsepower wars. It’s an effective way to boost, torque and performance

I get it in the performance world, shit our rav4 prime can probably compete with almost anything ICE coming off the line, but I have a hard time believing was built with electric motors for performance only in mind. It’s a by product of using in this case.

I'd think if efficiency was the primary goal, they'd have used a smaller engine combined with the electric motor. At this point, it doesn't seem like there's much benefit to the hybrid, unless you're towing heavy and often. But, most people would probably by a full size truck for that use case.

Agreed, however the plan is to have more vehicles under the same platform, and having different base engines would complicate that

The GX and Tundra are on the same platform and have a different engine. Having a hybrid option complicates things.

I think in the case of the 6th Gen 4Runner it’s a simpler and cheaper way to offer an engine power upgrade for higher trims than having to stuff the twin turbo V-6 in there with all the changes that would be required. In actual use I think any fuel efficiency gains are a minor by product of increased power via electric motor.

That’s way too big of a difference from the mpgs Toyota is marketing. If that becomes the average for most people then a class action lawsuit is in order.

I was thinking the Toyotas went to the Lexus engine and Lexus stayed the same, other than the hybrid addition

Yes. But they share a platform with the Tacoma/4runner/GX/LC.

I bet the hybrid is much nicer to drive at interstate hiway speeds. Especially if there's some wind. That extra power would be appreciated.

MPG ? My 4Runner,TRD-OR-PT4WD-Premium, VIN : JTEVA5BR2S5004371, is averaging about 20 mpg, this is all around, town and highway. My '23 Tacoma, 6 cylinder, avg 19-22.
I did think that the new 4R - 4cyl. would do better then that. No complaints on the new4R. This is my 7th one since 2008, and IMO, best one yet. The Gen5's have been fine, never an issue, I only changed tires to Michelins after delivery.

I have 600 miles on my 2025 TRD Premium hybrid. I'm getting 21.2 MPG so far. My 2019 got 19 MPG. According to the computer.
I'm hopeful for a bit more, but that air scoop is about to come off and it's elevation will increase by 2.5inches. So if I'm lucky, I'll be back down to 19 MPG.
