I learned some time back that arguing with icebear and nimby, along with a few others, is a waste of time. So don't bother with your time trying to reason with him.

I own a TRD Off-Road Hybrid and I personally have noticed the MPG to be worse in ECO mode...Try driving in Normal mode and see what you get. I am getting 22-23 MPG driving in normal mode, with factory cross bars on the roof. I do not have the lightest foot either off the line. I drive about 30 miles a day and the speed limits are around 55MPH the whole way. Once I get up to speed, I do switch over to cruise control. I also own a 5th gen TRD off-road and I was getting about 18.5 in that with a Prinsu rack and K02s for comparison. The new 6th gen hybrid is amazing.

My basic understanding of a hybrid powertrain is that it only works at lower speeds. You should get better range when driving in stop and go traffic, but I do not believe it would be much help with highway driving.

The other consideration is having more power means the vehicle does not have to work as hard to accelerate which should result in better fuel economy. Just as how many older V6 trucks got worse fuel economy than their V8 counterparts.

Not having to rely on the gas motor for slow speed and stop/go is only a part of it. The other part is it allows the gas motor to be designed and/or turned to run more efficiently at highway speeds without having to worry about low end performance. That's why with Corolla or Camry hybrids, their highway MPG is 20%-30% better than their gas only counter part even with identical bodies with identical aerodynamic profile.

Tends to feel that way when you just can’t grasp topics beyond “___ bad” and “buy it then”

Not my fault TF doesn’t want to understand there’s a difference between combined and highway MPG.

I have a question- not so much off topic as a sidebar. For those who track their mpg at the pump via an app or calculation. The accuracy of that calculation, it would seem, would depend on the gas pump shutting off consistently with respect to the fuel level in the tank. In the case of my ‘73 VW that is totally possible. While dispensing gas I can just look down the fuel filler neck and see the level of the gas. But in the case of the 4Runner, the fuel filler neck is long, and it has emissions crap inside of it, and when filling up there’s a lot of burbling right before the pump shuts off. I think we cannot assume that the level at which the pump shuts off is consistent from fill-up to fill-up. This introduces a margin of error in the fuel use calculation, no?

I say no. The app tracks the number of gallons that I enter from the pump and the mileage. Its no different than using a notepad and pencil, except it records the data neater than I write and does the math for me.

If you use the same gas station and pump each time it should be very accurate. Even switching pump types shouldn’t matter enough to make a noticeable difference. It’s not like you are suddenly going to fit in an extra gallon of gas.

Do you seriously think that I don’t know the difference between combined and highway mpg? Get a life man.

TFL does testing by waiting 30 seconds and filling until the next click to compensate. I haven’t really gone looking for opinions on that but that could certainly be an option to reduce inconsistency.

I recognize there’s likely some margin of error too, but I don’t really care enough currently to fret about it.

Driving conditions still seem to be a larger factor and while a full tank may technically vary, we’re still tracking miles driven and total gallons put in.

(both of which also have some margin of error especially if tires have been up/downsized.)

I'm really not understanding how else you would get mpgs, other than tracking the gallons you put in and the miles you drove. I see no way to ensure you fill up to the exact same point every time. Unless you let it spill over I guess.

Exactly. What I’m suggesting is that on a scale with a variation of 50 mpg (with the Bugatti Chiron at the low end @10mpg, and one of the Prius variations at the high end @60mpg) combined with differences in driving style, particular routes, fuel grades, fuel brands, temperature related fuel density, and inconsistency at the pump, that the mpg difference between the 5th gen and 6th gen is not very meaningful. It’s within the margin of error and only long term figures will be useful. Leaving the 6th Gen out of it, 5th Gen owners report mpgs with a 5mpg variance.

The change from 5 speed to 8 speed transmission alone should have netted about 10-15% better mpg on its own. If as you said the difference is not meaningful then the switch from the 1GR mated to the bullet proof 5 speed to the turbo 4+8 speed has been utterly meaningless.

I would think anyone who tows with the 6th gen is going to appreciate the extra power. Although, I guess that's pretty meaningless to people who buy them for trips to the mall in the grocery store

I see people towing with 4Runners pretty regularly. Do people not tow with 4Runners in your area?

The only time I see people towing in my area with 4runners is when they tow a Uhaul trailer.

Go to Hawaii where 4runners are as common as Corollas and see how many people tow with them.

I have a friend who's in Hawaii right now. I'll have him check for me.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Hawaii is only a small part of the 4Runner Market.

    LOL

But hey, I am in the SF Bay Area. I'm sure the number of 4runners here pales in comparison with...*check notes*...Wisconsin, the 4runner capital of the world unlike Hawaii or Coastal California.

That totally makes sense of why I should go and see how many people tow with 4runners in Hawaii.

Just an update, after 750 miles my ave mpg is 20.7

I filled up this morning and entered it into the Fuelly app so will be tracking with that now. Then I was screwing around with the various displays in the dash and accidentally zeroed the ave mpg. :frustrated:

Just filled up, tracking with Fuelly app. small sample size, 272 miles, roughly 75/25 highway/city. 21.9 MPG - Mobil 87 octane.
4Runner has about 1050 miles on it.

I have a short 4 mile commute - i average about 16mpg per tank - if i hit the highway and get out of town during a tank of gas ill get 18-19 on that tank. I have a pedal commander and a lead foot - seems about right

I'm getting 19.8 average on my TRD premium hybrid. Mostly highway and city driving for my commute. I got 23 mph highway on a trip recently. Hope that helps. I keep in ECO unless in mountains
