    https://www.carscoops.com/2023/12/f...isers-in-germany-sold-out-in-just-30-minutes/

Reservations for the new-generation Land Cruiser opened at 8 a.m. on December 21, only for them to close just 30 minutes later. First 1000 allocation sold.

Three versions of the Land Cruiser are available in Germany; the Executive, Tec, and the First Edition. The company has not specified how many of each trim will be included within the initial allocation of 1,000 cars but Toyota has previously confirmed that Europe-wide, the Land Cruiser First Edition will be capped at 3,000 units. German deliveries won’t start until the third quarter of 2024.

The Germans get the 2.8 Turbo diesel engine rather than the 2.4 Turbo gas. Lucky bastards.

Wow, didn’t know that Germans liked Land Cruisers that much. I sure hope US allocations are 20 times that for the first roll out.

Unusually large DEF tank on those, almost as big as the fuel tank:

Looks like a clunky 4 door FJ to me.

Hmm...I guess the Germans buy their DEF 55 gallon drums at a time.

Given the choice, I’d take gas over diesel myself.

I love diesels. Infact the 4runner is my first petrol SUV.
It would be carnage to sell a heavy SUV like 4runner in developing countries with petrol. With its abysmal fuel economy, no one would touch it with a barge pole. Most expensive cars in developing countries are bought as status symbols and almost always driven by a personal chauffeur so performance or lack of it is not an issue . Hence no market for a petrol V6. A puttering diesel would do just fine.
But if you give it a 3 lt turbo diesel with about 200 hp and about 500 Nm torque, you have a winner on your hands because you cater to the self driven as well as chauffeur driven category. Also, because diesel is traditionally cheaper than petrol there.

I do get a preference for gas. I would never want a diesel car. A diesel truck, with that low end torque, would appeal to me.

US is notoriously strict about diesel emissions. even more so than europe. I spent some time in german during my graduate studies and could not stand the exhaust smell of diesel taxis. Not fun.

Germany has the largest economy and population in Europe (85m) and someone is surprised that dealers bought 1000 new model cars to put on their lots in 30 minutes? The only surprise would be that it took that long. Happens every day.

My cars are all diesel in Europe. Diesel fuel is less expensive, registration is less expensive, insurance is less expensive, so all running costs are much less expensive. Only a small minority of people want to or can afford petrol.

It would be nice if we could have both options here. It's too bad government regulations have pretty much ruined diesel for anything other than heavy duty use.

The torque is very appealing. But, after wheeling with a diesel 80 series a few times, I think I'd rather stick to gas for my trail vehicle. Don't get me wrong; that 80 is frickin' awesome! I just really don't like the smell of diesel.

    I love old pre-DEF diesels.
    DEF is evil.
