What a pain in the ass. I traded in a 2008 Limited to get a ‘24 ORP before the 6cyl engines were ended. The 2008 was literally a 20min oil change with the filter on top.

Granted this was my first change with lessons learned, but with clean up it was a 2 hour job. Filter housing needed a breaker bar to get off and I thought I was going to to strip the pan bolt I had to pull on the wrench so hard. Dealer definitely did not follow torque specs.

I bought this used with 20K miles in Dec 2024 and this was 5K change. Plastic filter housing definite showed slight wear on the bottom where the filter wrench attaches so I am glad I installed a metal per discussions here with moving the chimney pipe etc…

The oil comes out with a lot of force on this truck so there was some splash. Glad I installed a Stahlbus valve for the next change. For you first timers, recommend leaving oil cap ON the engine, remove bolt, then remove oil cap to avoid the splash.

I put all things on to torque specs and put some anti-seize on skid plate bolts. Put in exactly 6qt Penzoil so waiting to see how much more to add as I down a few cold ones.

I use the Valvomax oil drain valve with attachable clear hose (provided in kit) to the center hole in my 12 quart oil catch container. Additionally, I use the Motivx oil filter wrench, drain tool and funnel. It also includes a clear hose which plugs into the bottom of the oil filter housing, again, to offset any chances of a mess. The majority of the time spent on the oil change is removing the skid plates, with some member’s noting that there are aftermarket skid plates with removable access covers to the drain plug/valve to speed things along.

I use literally everything that you use plus One of the aftermarket skid plates with access doors and I can confirm oil changes are much more pleasant

Just like anything, the more you do it, that “faster” you’ll be. But don’t be too fast that you accidentally forget something. All in all, i can can get my runner on the lift, and drain and refilled within 30 mins give or take. Also gives me a chance to look over (under) the vehicle and inspect stuff with a flashlight

Take your time. Learn about your new ride. As you develop a relationship, you'll know exactly what she needs and where she likes attention. I plan on 2 hours for every 5000 mile service. That's oil and filter change, engine and cabin air filter inspection/change, greasing the driveline, rotating the tires, and otherwise looking at everything to make sure it doesn't need anything else. I do have RCI skids with access doors, but only for the last 30,000 miles. I've been doing oil changes since new and I just completed the 190K service. You'll get used to the stock skid plate removal. You'll figure out how to not make a mess. There are tools to make your life easier, like MotivX filter wrench and drain system. It's not a race, nor is it a NASCAR pit stop.

+1 on the MotiveX tools. I bought the kit a few years ago that came with the funnel that is threaded for the oil cap fitting on the oil filler port.

I do have the MotivX filter wrench, I am hesitant to buy an aftermarket skid for when I may need some dealer service. I dont have a lift so I am crawling under with Rhino ramps. I did drain the filter with the MotivX drain system also which seems like a slow stream, it has a small opening that screws up into the filter housing. Yeah, next time I’ll have all the right sockets ready.

I changed the 08 Runner 30 times, had it down to missing one inning of a ballgame.

My 2015 Tacoma is a fast oil change. Oil filter on top makes for a quick replacement.

It's the TRD skid plate that gets me! Over time i have gotten better at it but sometimes getting it back on is a huge pain laying on your back in a 100F garage in the summer.

I don't bother with the stupid plug on the filter plastic housing.

Be glade you got the V6, i was just a the dealers yesterday and they had a ton of tacomas, tundras and the new 4runners. Funny thing is they had a bunch of new Tundras in the shop waiting to be fixed.

I’m sorry for the buyer’s remorse you seem to be feeling, and that it will take you two innings to change your oil instead of one. Maybe you could listen to the game while you change the oil. Or change the oil before the game. Or after.

Didn’t mean to imply that at all! Typical.
