2023 TRD ORP - Suspension Upgrade Thoughts

I think I'm convinced on:
- Bilstein 6112 / 5160 Front / Rear Combo
- Either a 1.9" or a 1.5" lift (will make my final decision here soon)
- Let them configure it however the manufacturer recommends for left-to-right rake
- The Bilstein B12 Special Coil Spring 1.5" lift (without added weight), so part number: 36-281824 (apparently there are three different part numbers) had to do a bit of research on this one.
- I will call StrutSurplus on Monday to see if it comes with our without the boot for the rear, and with or without the reservoir bracket. From all pictures online on any other site, those rear struts should come with the reservoir bracket.
- I do plan on reading Toyota's manual on torque specs and see their recommended procedure in the manual and how closely it matches the YouTube videos, and if there are any gotchas anywhere.
- I do plan to do the install myself unless that proves to be a problem for any reason.

As @HuskyMike was saying, you don’t need a suspension upgrade to fit your choice of tires.

Now, if there’s other factors involved go for it! If it’s just to fit 275s, you need only to get ‘em mounted and possibly tune the alignment.

 

I do want a lift because I do go off-roading.

 

I did my research:
- The part numbers that ShockSurplus sells, as per Bilstein's website, comes with the hardware for the reservoir (which makes perfect sense that it would).
- I dropped a note to ShockSurplus in my order asking to ensure all parts are their prior to fulfilling the order
- I went with the 1.5" front and 1.5" rear, I want to keep the front-to-rear rake for vehicle stability at higher speeds.
- There are multiple part numbers for the 1.5" rear coil lift from bilstein, the ones I went with are for the "no heavy load" such as metal bumpers, etc.
- I placed the order!

Looking forward to getting a little more out of this truck's capability off road. I went with the 1.5" lift instead of 1.9" to be more generous to the axles angles, center of gravity, etc. When its time for a tire change, I'll gain another inch or so with the new tires, so 1.5" is more than plenty.

 

I just put on the b12, no heavy load, which is part number 36-281817. The lift was much closer to 1” than 1.5”. I paired with a 1” front lift on 6120s and the rake seems very similar to factory. Adding 1” in front only was too level for my taste.

 

yeah the part number ending in 17 is closer to 1” and the part number ending in 24 is closer to 1.5”. The part number ending in 37 is 1.5” heavy load.

Sorry, I missed this in the thread. So I’d still just do the tires but now add rock sliders.

I doubt Bilstein will do much of anything anything for off road prowess. The geometry of IFS is what it is.

 

I already have the rock sliders. But I want the lift for some ground clearance. At least to off road places I’ve been to are pretty rocky, I struggled to clear the skid plate in many cases. Which made it fun, but limited how far I could go.

I’m an amateur, still experimenting. But I have bilsteins in my Miata and I know they have solid parts. So reliability should remain, and I also want to play! This car is a bit of a hobby too.

Also, I don’t plan to do tires until these wear off and I’ve got quite a bit to go still.

 

Do get out and play, at the same time enjoy the modifications journey.

I have officially installed the 6112 / 5160 combo with a 1.5” lift all around. And it’s absolutely wonderful. The 1.5” seems more like 2” actually. Maybe it needs to settle a bit.

The car drives wonderfully. It is still comfortable but it rolls, squats, and dives less. The 1.5” lift all around is perfect. I can see how a 2” can be even better but I wanted to still fit inside old parking garages.

Huge upgrade my ORP feels next-level now.

I don’t know if I’ll need an alignment or not. Probably. But nothing changed about the car’s ability to track straight, straight wheel etc.

 

Based on your comment regarding the rock, I strongly suggest you you put a full set of steel skid plates at the top of your list. Aluminum won't hold up very long in the scenario you mentioned.

 

I’ve hit my Greenlane skids hard a few times and they are holding up great. Much much better than the oem plates.

 

Alignment? Yes please

 

Give the guys @AccuTune Offroad a call. They have several setups, properly valued for 4Rs. I run Fox 2.5 DSCs front and rear with 1” Eibach coils out back.
On and off-road ride outstanding.

Update: I wound up adjusting to a 1.9” lift rather than a 1.5”.

I figured if I’m gonna lift, I preferred to go all the way up whilst not needing UCAs. I still maintain a bit of a rake, since the rear is at a 1.5” lift.

 

What caster did you end up with? After my 1.7” lift the shop wasn’t able to get more than 2.2 caster on my truck.

 

I don’t know yet, I’ll be taking it for an alignment in the coming days.

For what it’s worth, truck tracks straight and the steering wheel points straight as well. But I’ll be going in for an alignment soon. I’ll update this thread.

 

Bigger tires is what gives you the ground clearance. Pick the tire size you want and mod from there

 

True but 4Runner doesn’t give much room to work with. 275s might be the max one can go with without major mods. I might go with that in wild peaks.

it depends what one is trying to clear from: the diff and lower arms: bigger tires. The rest? Tires and lift both help.

But besides the lift, the performance of the new suspension itself is really good. Less dive, roll, and a bit of stiffer rates.

 

You should be able to get close to 3.5 degrees with a 1.7" lift up front. Perhaps they only turned one cam adjuster on the LCA instead of both.

I did, start to finish.

 

Do you have kdss? No need to spring compressor?

 

Struts can be ordered assembled making the install very easy.

 

No KDSS. I bought the struts assembled. To re-adjust the circlip to go from 1.5” to 1.9” I did have to pay a local shop to re-adjust them. I removed them from the car, went to the shop, they readjusted them for a small fee, and I reinstalled them.

I would not want to mess with spring compressors myself. Very dangerous and requires proper training on them.

 

@garoto Are you still sitting over 1.5" in the back or has it settled? Could you measure the hub-to-fender distances when you get a minute? Looking to do a very similar lift to yours. Thanks!

I love my setup and it’s been amazing.
1.9” front: ~21.5”
1.5” rear: ~23.6”

 

What do those numbers represent?
