Recently bought a 5 month old 4Runner. On multiple occasions it has started by itself, once while I was near it and several times I've walked outside and it was running. At first I thought with the key fob in my pocket maybe one of the buttons got pushed. The last time it happened the fob was laying on my kitchen counter. What is causing this and how can I disable it?

Remove the batteries from all your fobs and see if the symptom changes. I'm assuming remote start is factory installed and not dealer installed or aftermarket. The truck may still be under warranty, too.

It's a Limited so it is a factory install. I typically don't use autostart so if I could figure out how to disable I would.

Maybe the dealership can disable? Either way, is it still under warranty?

Go onto the Toyota app and make sure that you’ve registered the 4Runner under your login. It will have you enter a code into the nav screen. Someone may have registered the car and keeps starting it via the app.

Is the engine actually running or are you hearing the EVAP test that is mentioned in the manual and starts a few hours after you shut the engine off?

5 months old? Call your dealer. This is an obvious warranty issue!!!!!

This happened to me while camping this weekend. Wife climb down from the tent, then starts telling me something is on, not happy to have to go figure it out at 5 in the morning.

Too poor to buy anything now
When the initial free time expires of remote access that came with it new, it will quit doing that.

    Mall crawling kit.
Someone activating remote start via DCM system. You need to disable that, or at the very least revoke previous owner's access to it.

To do that, you need to contact Toyota Connected Services. While you are doing that, strongly recommend opting out of data collection "services". There are stories of GM/OnStar driving data ending up getting sold to insurance companies resulting in increased premiums.

^ You're overreacting per the milgram fans lol! They will tell you that there is nothing to worry about w/ DCM, and that you are secure enough! However, you are correct!
