2022 TRD Off-Road Premium

Hello to everyone::
Long time Toyota owner. Use to have a 2013 Tacoma 4x4 extra cab but some fool in a Jeep slammed into me while i was stopped at a traffic light - totaled the truck. Insurance was kind enough to pay out 40K so i purchased a lease returned 4runner with 12k miles in October. Since then, I've been bit by the overlanding bug (like a many others) and haven't stopped adding mods. Looking forward to learning more and hopefully meeting some good folks in the process.

Question - does anyone know of a work around/solution to get the BSM system (blind spot monitoring) to function thru the C4 Fabrication bumper? I've been told they will not work because the metal is too thick and the sensors can't send out a signal.

There is a sensor on each back corner of the 2022 4Runners that shows you via your passenger and driver side mirrors if there is anyone next to you. The sensors also control the rigs ability to apply the breaks automatically when backing up if the sensors detect a person or car behind you.

i'd like to think there is someway or relocating them or maybe i'll have to find a fabrication shop and have them modify the rear bumper and mount them beneath each side.

Well, you are on the right track with fabrication. I don't have it so just guessing from other experiences. But i think either a cut out put in or a bracket to mount it below made somehow would be your choices. But that would probably hinder your clearance in the rear.

Thank you. Ya I was thinking about a series of vertical or horizontal cuts in the quarter panel of the bumper maybe a 1/4 inch separation. Mounting to the bottom of the bumper might work as well. If the sending units can be mounted horizontal and still be functional. Think I need to find a toyota master mechanic to have a chat with. Thanks again.

 

Nice rig. I like my c4 rear bumper as well. In regards to the sensors don’t mount on the bottom. Quick way to get them destroyed. I would have holes drilled out and put them in that. But I would have a professional do it if you are not handy. Plus you will want to match the black paint on those sensors. I think they are white right now. You have any pictures of what these sensors look like?

They are not the small circular sensors that have been in cars and trucks for years. They appear to be mounted near the corners if not not the corners of the rig maybe on the sides behind the c4 cutout. I haven't pulled my bumper back off nor was I present when the shop did the install. Just going off pictures I can find online. In the 2022 model they also serve as sensors to stop the truck when you are backing up and don't see an obstacle. But since there is a backup camera that aspect of the sensors seams like a waste. I bet the older round sensors we all know and have seen would work fine for alerting you of someone in your blindsppt on the sides of the runner. Don't know. I need to talk with folks who have done this conversion. C4 says they are working on a solution. So maybe wait and see what they come up with.

 

Oh man. Not what I was thinking at all. My wife’s 2020 Sienna has those circular ones. This is going to be interesting.
