    Hello All!

Wondering if anyone else has been experiencing any key fob issues with their 2022 4Runner?

I Just purchased a brand new SR5 in Canada and two days after bringing it home from the dealership, the remote key fob stopped working. I wasn't able to lock/unlock using the fob but was still able to lock/unlock using the door handle. 4Runner still recognizes the fob and will start with no issues.

Currently been at the dealership for 5 days.......any suggestions??

That would seem to point to the receiver in the truck malfunctioning.

The dealership has attempted to reprogram the key fobs but has been unsuccessful

Were they trying to reprogram your old Fobs batch or a new set of Fobs for trials?

The new Toyota proximity key fob situation is a hot mess. I tried to get an extra key set up for my Highlander at Toyota and they told me $465 for the key fob and to cut the valet key and $65 more dollars to program it. My response was "so you don't do new keys for Highlander. Do you know who can?" Lol

Car keys should not cost $500. Toyota has got to do something about this ASAP

I ordered an additional FOB ($219.99) and key ($99.99) and battery ($5.50) from my Southeast Toyota dealer when I picked up my 2022 TRDPro ($325.48 total.) The dealer cut the key, which works in the supplied FOBs, but it won't unlock the door easily. The additional FOB is on backorder. I didn't think about the programing fee. What a pain.

I would love to permanently disable the proximity auto door unlock feature - to stop it sending out signals continuously

I wanted to give everyone an update on the key FOB issue incase anyone else experiences the same thing. Might save some time and headaches. Let me break this down for you....

Took possession of my new 4Runner SR5 on a Thursday night.....everything worked perfectly! 24 hours later, neither key FOB was not working.

    1. Took the 4Runner back to the dealership after ~100 km because I couldn't Lock/Unlock the vehicle with the key FOB only (both FOB did not work). Proximity sensor (door handle) and door panel buttons worked.
    2. They tried to re-program the FOB. No success.
    3. Apparently the dealership was working with Toyota Engineers to try and solve over the phone. They would ask them to check different components and have the dealership report their findings. Some door panels and front passenger dash was taken apart to troubleshoot.
    4. After a few days the dealership called to tell me the proximity sensors (Door Handles) and door panel buttons no longer worked. Still working with Toyota Engineers.
    5. Day 5 the issue was found!!! There is a multi pin connector that is located in the rear tailgate area that was loose from the factory and must have come apart from opening/closing the tailgate. This connector is responsible for monitoring the key FOB signal and transmitting the data to the controller.

Hope this is helpful for anyone experiencing the same issue!

If you hold in the lock button and press unlock 3x it turns off the RF of the fob so that feature is disabled and can't be stolen by someone trying to get into your car. You have to do it every time you lock the car though, it's not permanent. I usually do it when it's going to sit over night or for a while during the day.

@Sherk20 Thank you for posting some detailed information about your experience.

I just bought 22 ORP 4Runner Last Saturday. My 4Runner just did the same thing. By chance do you know which Connector in the Tail-Gate?

Its looking like I am going to have to send mine to the dealer as well. Strange issue.

@22AZ4Runner - No problem. Hope it's the same thing and just a simple connector. The service Manager showed me a photo of the connector but I'm not too sure which side it was on. I know it was a white multi-pin connector about 3" wide. Sorry I cant help out more. If I have time today I can reach out to the service manager and ask some questions......I'll post the information here when I get it.

Did the dealer tell you what they did to fix it?
Did they just de-mate the connector(s) then re-mate them?
Or was one pin pushed up and not making contact?

I believe the connector just needed to be re-seated to make contact.

Thank you so much @Sherk20 for the info, I was going to go by the dealership today, but things came up. Will probably suffer with just proximity for the week and go next Saturday to have it looked at, and will update here once I find out

    Thank you for posting!

Picked up our 4R Friday and just experience this same issue today. My wife was wanting to increase the sound of the beep and when she turned it up everything in the door lock settings shut off. We turned everything back on/off several times, rebooted the head unit, etc. No buttons on either key fob do anything now but the keyless part of the fob still works fine(touch the door handle and to start the car, etc). Would be a weird coincidence if it is the connection in the tail gate, will report back once we found out for certain.

Edit, checked all connections and the issue still remains. Checked fuses and all were good. Thinking software issue since we noticed an anomaly earlier when adjusting settings.

Took it to the dealer today and apparently the module was still in learning mode and when we made a change to the audible beep it turned that function of the fob off for some reason. They had to reset the system, unsure what all was involved with that procedure, and now the fob works normally and you can make changes in the infotainment system without issue.

So I just wanted to provide an update on my 4Runner. After the dealership fixed the connector in the rear cargo door, everything has been working flawlessly. However, I was camping last week and was playing around with the unlock/lock tone volume as I wanted to turn it down so I didn't wake anyone up at the campsite. After changing the volume, my keyfob would not lock/unlock the doors remotely. I could use the door handle features and everything else worked as it should.

Took it to the dealership and they needed to complete a "reset" similar to @The Kracka. Service tech said some changes were made to the unit that aren't even accessible through the user interface??? Glitch?? Hopefully I don't experience this again.....

I am having this same issue. It happened immediately after I changed some of the settings since we just got ours. It definitely started right after changing the unlock/lock tone volume, so it seems like that is causing an issue with the fobs. The proximity lock/unlock works fine, but both fob buttons are not working. Does anyone know if you can reset on your own, or can it only be done through the dealer?

same situation here. New 2022 with 250 miles. I wanted to change the setting to unlock all the doors when you touch the handle and ever since I changed that setting neither key fob will unlock or lock the doors. The doors still lock and unlock by touching them and the push start still works fine. I’m curious if disconnecting the negative battery terminal and letting it sit for 30 minutes will reset whatever module needs resetting. Just left the dealer last week with this new car and not looking forward to returning so soon.

This seems like a bug. Hopefully Toyota engineers reading this post will release a software patch immediately deployed nationwide.

I’ve been using this technique since I got it when parking in a public parking lot. At home I have a large faraday case for all our keys for a few years now.

New owner here, adjusted my beep volume a few weeks ago and the remote system has been broke since. Has anyone came across a TSB for this yet or have the dealers worked it out fairly easy?
