2020 Toyota Supra

Is Toyota going to take over the automobile market again? With a little help from BMW?

 

I don’t like BMW really. It can’t compete with the new Z28!!

 

For HP numbers and the price they are asking, there are better alternatives.

 

No, but it will be a fun car to drive on the street. An I believe even the twin BMW is rated for more hp than the supra. Toyota is going for more road and street settings according to the latest motor trend I read.

 

Looks the likes of the FRS/BRZ.

So dumb, a Toyota with a BMW engine.

Just like the FRS with the Subie engine but at least they are reliable.

Just stopped by a local dealership here in VA, they had a launch edition Supra in the showroom. I was extremely tempted, until I found out the asking price. $82,000, almost a $30k market adjustment. Derp yeah no thanks

 

I’ll take a z06 or even the new mid engine corvette over a new Supra any day

Some killer deals on Mustang GT 5.0's right now. Found one dealer advertising one with the performance pack 1 for $32600. Amazing car for that price.

A few mistakes with the BMW made Supra engine. Example ..the spark plug that screws into the head will screw in BUT it has to have a Unique tool to tighten it up. The hole in the head is not large enough for a socket that fits the spark plug!! The socket has to be a super thin wall socket. If you grind down a normal socket it would break while tightening the plug. ERROR

The head gasket is heated up to factory set temperature and then pressed into a female machined groove. Without the tooling and factory tools it would be almost impossible to work on the engine.. ERROR

The engine is almost a carbon copy of the BMW 4 series engine but BMW says its engine is 5 hp more. This is true. BUT. The Supra engine really has 50 more HP due to the tuning from Toyota. Many Videos of new Supra owners running to a Dyno to see what they really bought. The Supra is much faster and powerful. I think BMW insisted that the BMW engine must have a HP advantage.

The Supra engine is a inline 6 but only has 2 exhaust outlets from the head. The reduction from 6 to 2 was made IN THE HEAD.

The timing chain is on the REAR of the engine wedged between the block and the transmission ! A nightmare to work on for sure.

And, even though it is probably a good car, I could never buy one.

The Supra, particularly the MK4, is still one of the most sought after sports cars in history, with one of the most amazing engines ever produced.

To follow that up by subbing it out to another manufacturer is insulting and lazy. Either do it, or don't.

Some people will agree, some won't. Just my opinion.

 

Ya an Italian guy that worked near me got a new one in 94/95 I think. We had the same stereo shop do fiberglass panels and instal some equipment. It was a red turbo. A little small if you ask me....But had a good look to it, never rode in it...

 

I guess they kept it affordable considering, using a BMW engine.

 

I am surprised by the price. I think turbos were going for $45k+ in the 90's.

Funny thing is, you can hardly buy a 4th gen turbo for what they were new right now. I'm sure there's exceptions, but people are asking a lot for them in general.

I think that they are ugly and tainted by the association with BMW.

My daughter and son-in-law are stationed in Japan. Lots of the older and better Supras over there that I could see.
