For those of you with new 4Runners that have Toyota's "smart key" system, I'm curious as to how well they function.

I'm considering buying a new 4Runner Limited, so have been pursuing the owner's manual on-line. The smart key system seems pretty complex and not user-friendly. I read several precautions about the key possibly malfunctioning if it's near a cell phone or metallic objects like keys, or when the door handle gets wet from a rain storm or going through a car wash, the door may automatically unlock or an alarm may sound.

These scenarios seem like every day life occurrences; is this smart key system really that finicky?

Are you happy with the smart key system and are these precautions in the manual overstated?

    Thanks!

We've had no issues at all. Each smart key is programmed to the user's preferences and has not failed once. Everything is working as it should.

Curious though...why are you focused on the keys? There's so much more to go wrong with a vehicle. Just sayin'.

Thanks. Reading the manual, the smart key seemed quirky. It says keep it 3 meters from a cell phone. How is that possible when carrying both on your person?

    Thanks again.

From a parts perspective I have had people have issues if they work or live in an area where there are a lot of cell phone towers, this will cause the key not to work at the distance they were used to. Other than that I haven't had many complaints. I hope that this helps!
