Before I get mugged by "search the forum", I did! Just wanted to follow up my search with a final question: has anyone ever reached a consensus on ye olde engine whine? When we bought ours with 36k miles back in 2016, it was nice and quiet. Somewhere around 60k miles it developed the supercharger whine (sadly, without the actual equipment - *cries in not enough WHP*). I did do an idler pulley and the alternator just for funsies, with no change of course. I've heard everything from throttle body to timing chain related fixes. Just wondering, as I adore the 4runner but I cannot stand the whine.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Are you talking about that engine whine noise when you shut off the engine?

No that's just me going in to work.

Nah, I mean the one that happens in drive, park, neutral, etc. It's purely aligned with engine RPM, more go pedal, more whine. Literally sounds supercharged.

Yeah, that's actually the reddit thread I got the timing chain info from, and I did see that other thread. Thing that sucks is we went from NH to CT to get this thing, but the dealer tried the old switcheroo when we got there and claimed the super ultra everything warranty our 4runner would have cost more. I declined and demanded they honor the original agreement, so to be petty they didn't allow the warranty transfer or something. I don't know fully, I just know our local reputable toyota dealership indicated it wasn't covered but the warranty did exist. So, if it IS the timing chain pulley, that's out of reach so it'll be a case of live with the whine. Bummer.
